least favorite time of year to hunt

This is mine. Rivers are bank full or over the bank. Made the 3 hour drive to hunt where the coons aren't scarce like they are at home. Dropped my old Billy dog and he covered 2.5 miles before he hit a track. Not in a straight line but hunted the woods good. He finally treed and was about 500 yards away. He'd been treed for an hour and the closest I could get was 150 yards because he was on an island. Normally it's all dry but tonight there's water everywhere. I checked with a stick and the water was 5 feet deep the first step in. Luckily I was able to call him off the tree. Normally can't do that. The last time he treed on an island I couldn't get to he treed at 10p.m. and I finally borrowed a boat at 7a.m. the next morning and he was still teeing 100+ barks a minute and was sitting under a big coon when I got to him. I am not a fan of high water spring hunting. What's your least favorite time of year to hunt?

Heat

July and August. Those nights when the temperature never gets below 80. You have to worry about a dog having a heat stroke.
That's almost as bad as when the ponds and lakes have thin ice on them. We just stay home when the ice is thin. Don't want to risk a dog falling through.

We don't get real hot up here. It's tough on my dogs when it is hot. Last year I left here for American Days and it was in the 40's at night. The first night we hunted in Missouri it was 90 at midnight. Knocks the zip right out of a dog. Thin ice is bad too. Had a couple close calls through the years. Was in a hunt one night and Billy was whining and barking and I could tell it was bad. I withdrew him and took off and found him trying to get back on the ice after falling through. Had to break ice from shore to get to him. By the time I got him I was up to my shoulders in ice water but I got him out. We were both shivering, soaked, and covered in ice by the time we got to the truck. That old dog and I have proved many times in the last 10 years that if you're gonna be dumb you'd better be tough.

bad time

In the South it's when hot, dry, pollen heavy and leaves on trees. Dogs can't smell well in dry leaves once they leave creek bottom and hard to find coon in the trees, and other leafy trees get in the way of shining tree they're on. Also have Rattlesnakes, Cottonmouth water moccasins, and gators to contend with.

January and febuary. This time of the year where I live in indiana I think is the worst as far as coonhunting goes. This is when the boars are traveling far distances to find females still in heat. Most females are bred by this time and they are laid up for the most part. So these tracks are forever long and go in and out of dens. The ground is usually froze and a thin frost hits it at times so scent doesn't stick around long. This time of the year can sure make you sctrach your head at times.

Why does everyone want to complain when the hunting is tuff? When the going gets tuff, the tuff get going. Everyone wants those easy pop up coons/trees. They want to have the big hunts when the coons are plentiful and not running far and the leaves are on. I wonder what type of hounds we would have if there were no hunts allowed from May to August? I just love those long hard cold tracks when it takes a real hound to get a coon treed. That is my favorite time of year.

Kevin sounds like your least favorite time to hunt may not be you most favorite but any time is a good time to see a. Red dog get under a coon.

Kevin,
The fact that you have a least favorite time of the year to hunt shows that you hunt it anyway....even though it can suck at that time. I hunt year round...but things slow way down in late December and early January here because if we have much snow on the ground and its froze up....the coons will hibernate for weeks at a time. You may tree some stinky dens but there wont even be tracks around them in the snow. Thats makes it hard for young dogs....but my least favorite time is probably July and August....so hot and usually dry. The kittens are down but the heat just makes it hard on the dogs and I could sure do without the skeeters that time of year also.....but I still hunt it....and gripe about the heat and bugs. My favorite time is March - may and Oct and Nov.

Don't coon hunt a lot in the winter. We tree a few but for the most part the dogs and I are chasing bobcats and lions in the winter. We run coons all spring, summer, and fall though.
