Hunt them alone and judge the dog as if you were in a hunt after several nights like this if your dog don't draw any minus then your ready to start but if your dog draws minus in any two hour hunt by himself keep training alone good luck hope you win a lot

Im the opposite...before a hunt i run mine with my buddy and his dog....normally we hunt alone most of the time...so we hunt em together before hunts to get them used to hunting with other dogs and competition....

Then i usually lay him up a nite before the hunt...rest him up and he is ready to go huntin come hunt time...

Train the dog to come to me when called no matter what...treed or not so I can handle him when others are looking to catch theirs. Train him to shut completely up at the tree and not bark one more time when I get to the tree..conserve energy! Hunt him really hard up to about 4 days before the event...let him rest and be ready. Feed the dog as much as hell eat 2 to three days before the event. Usually spaghetti and meat! At the event...keep the dog well away from others dogs and people and keep the dog rested. Always served me well...my dogs have usually blown out the competition and handle great. The only problem was I will usually have to wait around for the last cast to come in to take pictures and collect my winnings!

He didn't ask on how to make a world champ as I have never owned one. However, I have had a few that I know could have competed on that level. He wanted to know unique things to get ready for a hunt. A well fed, rested, and trained athlete will usually prevail in a tough hunts. Especially when most of the other dogs are tired, have no carbs to draw energy from and have been standing up all day barking their heads off on the grounds and smelling butts all day!

Nothing, everything I do hunting 5 to 7 nights a week is getting them ready. I sure am not gonna change anything right before a hunt. That will only cause stress.

I agree with all of this. Most young dogs that i sell are hunted alone, most are trash free, wont stay in the ground, and can be cut a few feet off a tree. I have a real good female that will be in a few bigger hunts this summer/fall.

Good luck to you! Go wear'em out at those hunts! Most people are there to talk about good dogs...you take one there and win it with one!
