old timers

Two of the old farts I grew up hunting with and picken there brains are dead now but how meny of yall still go by the myths and ways you were taught by the old school coon hunters? One of mine that I still believe is hunting a female why she is pregnate. Keepen the runt from your litter if its a female an. Keepen the male dog with the biggest butt hole and blackest mouth you can find etc a lot more but I want to finish this up and post it.

Yeah its the same tale as you would here old timers talk about fishen wind blowing out of the east fish bite the least wind blowing from the west fish bite the best. Idk if its true or not I hardly pay attention to which way the wind blows even when I deer hunt if your mint to kill one you were ment to kill one.

There were old timers that made their living with dogs and lived with them ... they learned more than us weekenders ever will and it wasn't wive's tales or nothing like that.

There were also old timers that were just as goofy as the goofiest we got today .

If you made a living selling furs with a gyp ... you didn't lay her up til' she was about to pop .. wasn't nothing more complicated than that.

If you can get your hands on some turn of the century books on hunting , cocking and that type of stuff you will be humbled by how well spoken and educated many of those guys were and that the same basics apply today ... I'm not sure we have taken what they worked hard to learn any further or as far as we should have.

The communication and advertisement age has really taken our focus off our own back yards and learning for ourselves.

Always had fantastic luck with a walker with brown or black down their right front leg past their elbow. Look at the magazine pics and you'll see this too! Not all have it but about 85% do. Didn't mean I wouldn't on a white one...I'm just saying...

like how in the old cocking books they say when you put a cock on the walk dont put it with turkeys because it will teach the bird to duck etc. im kin to a guy who most cockers has a little of his blood on there yard. Frank ellis roundhead the lacy are good to they are basicaly the same thing.

Yep and our old boys learned it from THEIR old boys and on and on . A few learned it for theirselves and could watch a pup run around and grow and they had a good feeling for the dogs potential and how to help it progress .
Few things in life come up as you'd like 100% of the time so don't bet the farm on it if you don't want to be homeless .

"If the winds from the east, it's not fit for man nor beast."

Another favorite : "son, if she's gripin about you not getting something done at home, go huntin. It'll give her something different to gripe about"
