.

If you have another DC 40 swap the antennas and see if it works with an antenna you know is working on it. Should take about 5 minutes and will answer a lot of questions.
Lots of aftermarket antennas being sold that will replace the original.

I think he is getting "poor GPS coverage" rather than loosing the VHF signal. A friend of mine had one do this. It would just loose GPS lock and never regain it until you powered it off and back on. If the dog came by you with that collar on, it would be giving the single blink like it does when you first power one on. Updates did not help so it went back to garmin.

I'm puzzled by the fact that when I turn 2 hounds loose (1 with a dc40 on and the other with a 5 year old dc30) and they are hunting together, I will lose the 40 most commonly at 700+ yards and then signal is in and out for any distance beyond that. The do 30 will go out to about 900yards before I start losing signal on it??? I have tuff antennas on both collars and a longe range extendable on my 320.

Anyone have any answers of why the older dc30 consistently out performs the dc40???

For what the 320 was cracked up to be, I have been rather disappointed with its performance compared to what is advertised. Anyone else feel this way?

DC 40

I recently had the same problems with mine. I stayed on the phone with Garmin for about 5 days. We tried swapping antennaes, unplugging the battery, upgrading the software. The problems kept getting worse the dc40 would lose signal at 69 feet. I sent it back to Garmin and they sent me a new one. Not sure what the problem ever was.

Garminguru, I agree with you but since it is Saturday and you can't contact Garmin till Monday I would spend the five minutes and rule out the vhf antenna. Besides that it would be good experience for the owner of the collar to do some dismantling and understand better how it all goes together.

Call Matt at mountainside gps / telemetry sales , he can strengthen a dc40 signal to what it would be like having a dc30 . Don't ask me how or what he does cause I couldn't tell us but he can take a collar and work it over and it's 100% better than it was ! That I guareentee ! (540) 679-9628

When I bought a 40 instead of another 30, I was under the impression that its better to have $40 instead of $30??!!

I had the same problem but only in certain areas! There's a government facility in the middle of no where and the only time my collar acts up is around there I lose gps signal I don't know if they have a scrambler of some sort or what but its the exact same thing mine would do when I'm within 4-5 miles of this place.

I don't know the lodgestics of it but talking with Matt the 30 receiver is has a higher output processer that allows it for better reception ? He advertises this on the dog supply section .

All Im saying is that I didn't get what was advertised. Garmin said better reception with the 40, so why should I have to "upgrade" it w MAtt just to make it the same as my 30?

I'm sure that garmin now frequents this site now that they are partners with UKC...

I was just giving you a suggestion on how to get the most out of your collar , just a suggestion . If you don't like it fix it is my motto , dc 40's aren't worth a penny in my book .

I understand what you are saying. Like I said in my very first post... I done and had a new antenna put on etc. I know all the "tricks" Matt knows along with everyone else on here on how to get the most out of a collar.

I am starting to think they are junk too after seeing that nobody else has suggested to do anything that I haven't tried already, besides send it to Matt...

I know that my 30 consistently out performs my 40 in distance by at least 100 yards. I have several screen shots saved on my 320 to prove it.

I guess I will email Garmin and give them a call Monday or Tuesday and see what they recommend/suggest.

I am not at all in favor of sending collars to Garmin or anyone else to have them 'tuned' up or replaced, I did that with a few 30s in the past. That's what the WebUpdater is supposed to be for...

did you change the I D number on the collar. it sounds stupid but i have 5 dc 40 collars when hunting i had to change a id number on one of my collars. from the factory it was set at 9 i reset it to 34 had trouble losing it after i done it.sometimes i would lose it when the dog was still in the dog box. i changed it back to a low number (5 cause i was hunting with someone that had 19 used) haven't had any trouble since.

I was not questioning your judgement Bruce, just thought we read the post differently.
While I like to "think" I know a little something on these things, your knowledge far surpasses mine on them any day of the week!
