Question for UKC.

With all this discussion about the possible usage of the Garmins during hunt time, my question is wouldn't this require the same rule change process as any other rule change such as going to a countdown on the tree? I understand that UKC can and apparently has allowed there use at selected events on an experimental basis (which is a flat out rule violation no matter how you dress it up) but wouldn't a permanent change require passage at the rules session in August and require a yes vote from a majority of the breed associations?

It's not the end of the world Jim. It's no different then the "flat out rule violations" when they experimented with the likes of hunting judges and two hour hunts etc. etc..

I can only imagine the out cry should UKC impliment significant changes without any sort of test trials. It's a good thing.

Agreed. Change can be a good thing, its just that most are afraid of it. And its only smart to test that change before making the final decision. Regardless of the outcome, good call on giving it a shot!

That doesn't answer my question. Would such a rule have to follow the standard rule changing process at AO or would UKC just say, this is how it will be from now on? If it goes through the usual process, it could not possibly be implemented before Jan. 1st, 2014.

Did it require a traditional vote when they up and decided how much time was needed at the Ukc world hunt? They can do whatever they want lol. They are the boss!!!

i cant believe using a garmin in a hunt would even ever be considered. my biggest pet peeve while huntin is someone who turns there dog loose and stares nonstop at the garmin. i use mine but very minimal.

Right now I'm thinking this would simply become a policy to where UKC makes the decision just like the hunting vs non-hunting judges. Regardless, no such changes are being considered prior to the next rules change.

I'm pretty sure there would be some stiff restrictions if implimented. In other words; a lot of the concerns will not be concerns. We opened it up pretty good at the first test for a reason. Other tests down the road will likely see modified versions of the initial test. The final tests will likely be close to what we envision as the final result shoudl we decide to move forward with changes to the current telemetry use in/during nite hunts.

I sure hope Garmins are never allowed to be on and used in a UKC event.

I guess someone will be standing at the registration table handing out garmins to people that don't have one, or they could just use their beep beep system. I am sure a few are hard of hearing, so they will probably turn them up pretty loud. Sounds like a level playing field to me.

I guess it might be different in your area but of all the hunts i attended last year i can only remember one guy that didnt have a garmin, it was a young amish kid and he had a collar just no handheld so i loaded it on mine for him.

IMO Ukc is begging for arguments and formal complaints if they would allow Garmins or shockers. The name of the game is to have your dog prepared to out compete the dogs it draws and the handler to do its job in calling it, knowing the rules and acting in a proffessional manner. A Garmin and shocker are both training tools. When you show up to a hunt, training time should be over.

Between allowing garmins and the idea of holding 1 hr hunts ; these are just more steps to these Hunts and class of hounds completely getting out of control and going down hill. I feel like many of the people pushing for these changes are greatly out of touch with this sport, about competing and honestly have no idea what a coondog is

sorry for the off topic comment just had to unload!

I think UKC would be going a step backwards by allowing electronic devices to be used during time in. I have not seen one good reason posted yet as to why they should be allowed. It would be opening up a huge can of worms and the Nite Hunts would become more of a joke yet. There is enough arguements at them already without the use of electronics. Add electronics and see what happens.

I just wanna leave it on. Here a big hill can make a huge difference in keeping them picked up or turning it on trying to pick them back up. Still would be fine if you get caught looking during hunt time. You get sent home.

around here their are a couple that do not have garmins but 95 percent do. i myself agree with the last comment leave them on but get scratched if cought using them for un proper reasons. or at un proper times. for one its hard to get signal if ur dog is 7 or 8 hundred yards in a river swamp after having it turn off an for two their is so much deep water around here that it makes all scence to look when dogs have treed an see what side the creek or beaver ponds they are on.. no one likes to get soaked to their chest to find the dogs on the other edge when u could of went around an prevented getting wet

Does a tracking collar change how a dog performs in the woods? No. Does the dog know if your hand held device is on or off? No. So the dog gains no performance enhancement from this collar. However by having the collar on you would be able to keep dogs and handlers safer as well as do a better job judging the dogs. Yeah I can see we need to keep this rule change from happening. Every serious/casual competition hunter that hunts more than a night or two a week uses a garmin all week long to make hunting more enjoyable and productive for themselves. It seems quite hypocritical to then not want them used in the hunts. Why can't the hunts be more enjoyable. And by more enjoyable I mean you can tell where your dog is and see the terrain they are hunting there by allowing you an opportunity to protect your dog from dangers you may not know they are facing with the tracker turned off. Also it wood make it easier to position the cast in the most advantageous spot to listen and judge the cast. I see people that are opposed. Could some of you please list your concerns of how a garmin being on would ruin the hunts?

I do oppose using ecollars in the hunts because with them you can affect the actions of your dog which could enhance his performance.

What's wrong with using a gps or a tracker during a nite hunt? I don't think it should be used as a scoring tool but only to know where the location of the dogs are at at all times. Most every hunt you go to people hunt near roads. I myself do not hunt near busy roads. How can the use of a tracker make a dog more or less of a coon dog? Its time for change. We're not living in the 1800s this is 2013. If you want to see the hunt numbers go up allow the use of trackers at hunts.
