Hour long hunts

Should we start looking at holding one hour hunts as PKC & CHKC does? Any thoughts on the benefits or downfalls?

Another question along these lines are how titles are earned. Right now it takes at least three 2 hours hunts to make a NtCh , or 6 hours total at a minimum...

If you go to 1 hour hunts , that same dog could title after hunting only 3 hours... I'm not sure I like that idea at all.

If we're gonna think about 1 hour hunts , maybe we should also cut in half the earn points for titles along with it ?.. Does that make sense ?

I might be more in favor of 1 hour hunts if this happened. Just a thought.

Yeah, that makes sense. I feel like it would help good more people involved, such as older hunters who can't handle the longer hunts or those that have limited time on the weekends due to work or childrens ball games etc. Understand the concern over earning titles though!

What's ya'lls opinion on why some people hunt PKC during the week and then UKC on the weekends?

I think in the long run it would drop attendance. You title a dog out in UKC to quickly. If you make it easier then they will be done even quicker. I can’t hunt the local hunts right now because my dog is a Grand nite. She finished in 10 hunts and now I’m done for the local hunts. So I hunt PKC. Ukc is losing money now by making it to easy I wouldn’t think they would want to make it even easier than it is now.

If you want to have week night hunts make them money hunts and setup a completely different list of titles for it.

Why do people feel that once a dog is granded out it's done?

There are plently of breed days, RQEs, large events like AO, Grand American & Winter Classic, Purina race state hunts etc. a grand can be hunted in.

The only ones that should quit hunting are the ones with paper made grands.

Why? Keep a dog hunted down for 3 hunts? Pretty hard to hunt 1 down for GA and WC living in MN,rqes are great maybe if it takes you 10,I like comp hunting and don't like keeping 10 dogs!

I'll whip that tail in 1 hr or 2 hr. Makes no difference to me. Pick your poison. I think it should be an option one day and make point values half what they are now and leave Garmins on and if you don't know the rules. Specially something common like being shut out on tree. I being a judge can bar you for 1 yr!!!

i think they should have 4 hr hunts all on horse or mules. that would take the cross country runners out of the equation. then some old cripple like me could stay in the game..

Not everyone lives in the right part of the country to be able to hunt hunts like that to justify keeping a grand nite hunted up.. I do own a grand nite myself that I enjoy hunting too much to stop pleasure hunting him. But I am mainly pleasure hunting him for the sake of pleasure hunting because there is only small local hunts around here or PKC. I will not be keeping every dog I make grand, like Jesse I don't plan on feeding 10 dogs, or hunt them as hard as I do the one I have now if I do keep them around.

I think what sets ukc apart from the other kennel clubs is the fact u show up on the weekend to a nice club on a Saturday shoot the breeze for a while grab a bite to eat (at the club) go on a 2hr hunt ,come back in BS for a while then grab some breakfast at 2a.m. (also at the club) then head home win ,lose, or draw. Just wouldnt seem like UKC if we showed up during the week and hunted for an hour. Just hunt Pkc if u want to do that. Nothing wrong with it. Just not in Ukc. Im lucky enough to be able to hunt at a few nice clubs with good volunteers. (Troy IA one of the best clubs anywhere) Thats what makes UKC different just cant see that at a 1hr hunt during the week.

Understood. I guess I'm a little different than most. I don't go through dogs like I change my socks.

I'm pretty picky and try to find ones with the breeding, traits and disposition I like. I train them, hunt them and title them out. I don't consider my dogs to be a disposable tool and I don't get rid of them just because they're titled.

I don’t either if I like them they will die on my place. If I don’t they will never be titled anyway. That’s the problem. In Ukc with a nice one you are done by the time it turns two and then you no longer get to go to the local hunts with it. The local hunts are the point of this thread. Not AO, WC and such. The turn outs there are fine, it’s the local hunts that need help and I think a 1 hour hunt would do more harm than good by speeding up the path to Grand.

Michael why can't local hunts include grands? Last weekend a club in a neighboring state held a 2 day shootout hunt. There were 3 grands there.

Wasn't the UKC performance program created in part to address this?

Anyway I'm getting off topic. I voted no to 1 hr. hunts. Most of the local hunts I attend are a 2-3 hour drive and it wouldn't be worth the drive to only hunt for 1 hr.

This is our new generation, thinking up ways to hunt less and get the same glory (titles). All the reasons, all the excuses, the bottom line is you guys just don't wanna hunt.

I believe you nailed it Jim.
But how many are gonna admit it? LOL

I remember , as a young teen , my dad would guide and judge for the hunt. And then , after the hunt , we'd hunt with friends till daylight or after. Alot of times I didn't make it till daylight and slept in the truck. I don't see folks doing that anymore.

Yeah when yall was young. Was nobody around. 20 yrs ago. I could hunt a different location for weeks. Now I have to hunt the same spots weekly!!! That's what has changed the most. Im dam sure not skeered to hunt against Jim lmao! Its like this. They can look into having one hr hunts in spots or have no hunts at all. Our club will fall by the wayside in the near future. Specially if house business picks back up.

I like the two hour hunt. I'm not going to drive over an hour each way to hunt for an hour. And leave the Garmins off.

i remember when if you had a grand nite you had something. now just about anyone who is willing to hit the hunts can finish a half hook hound to grand. now the race is one to see who can do it with the youngest hound. 1 hour hunts will certainly help any registry.

One other reason its so easy is every town has s Coon club nowdays also and new ones opening!! Even if you still had more 3 hr hunts it'd be easier to title hounds....
