Dens are part of it , I do like to see a dog cut more of them off before they can slip to a den than not ... just one of those things that make you feel good about the talent of your dog .
I've climbed alot of dens to check , not as many i used to but it's kinda cool to see em' balled up in there or find a litter of babies in one.
I don't think backtracking is something that dens indicate ... the same dog would still backtrack in the summer and it just aint a trait that you see much anymore .... that's an old basset hound trait , lol.
I think too manys dens or treeing on persimmon , hackberry or just those toilet trees is from a dog being trained on artificial coon urine scent and a soft hearted owner that won't correct the habit early on for fear or ruining a dog or aint honest with themselves.
Not saying anything about the thread starter's dog .. but just on the topic in general
