Distemper and rabies have very similar symptoms. Drunkeness is one of them.

Did you think about maybe the coon had been hit and was dazed?

My son stoped to get a dead deer out of the road one night and it was still alive. It finally got up and staggered around for awhile before it seemed to get straightened out and took off in the woods. It took 15/30 minutes or more.
