How to stop aggression over coon.

Have a nice young male that is coming along nicely, no problems treeing with other hounds but when you shoot the coon out he gets aggressive with the other dogs, growling and snapping has even jumped on a female dog......anyone got any ideas on how to break him of this? Thanks

Get on him hard when he does that. I start as pups making sure they will share food and then a hide. Always start out tie him back from the tree and letting the older trusted dog have the shot coon first then on a leash bring the pup to the coon while the other dog is wooling it. They need to learn right off no aggression. It starts with the trainer you should have worked on it long befoe a coon was ever dropped out and the dog has to like and respect you and listen to you.

I agree Lee. Thats why I have a big 1/2 acre pen where all dogs can socialize. My Bluspeck male you can give him a bone and he will let a pup pull it out of his mouth and no matter how ruff another dog gets at the tree he will not leave just back up. You need to start early. When I feed I have an order I set dogs dishes down and they wait and wont touch the other dishes till I tell them they can. I think breeding has a lot to do with it also as far as ability to reason and listen.

when the coon is dead you need to get it away from the dogs quick... anytime you continue to let them wool over it you are asking for trouble.... after its dead they will get possessive of it... most want growl are get possessive until the coon is dead

Exactly right. Let the dogs drag a leash in so you got something to grab before the coon is dead and a tussle starts if you are hunting withother people. unless you love pooch so much you would stick your hand inthe middle of a dog fight. With just my dogs, Just before the coon is dead I usually walk right in and tell them to get back, dead. and i'll kick a little if if takes it but that is before the first growl. After that first growl you got about a half second to get you leg out of the way. Daughters will fight mamas any breed over a fresh dead coon. 5 seconds after the adrenaline rush and you have picked up the coon, they don't care anymore about it.

Same way you stop any sort of aggression. You put your foot in them. I say "my coon" and take it away. Don't give them a chance to be aggressive, but if they get out of hand you need to explain it to them immeadiately and without question that it will not be tolerated.

When the coon is dead it's mine, no exceptions, ever. As for growling, if it was mine I'd hit em upside the head hard enough to roll him and put the juice to em till the dog seen the light. If he tries to bite me he dies, no exceptions. Good dogs are easy enough to come by ya shouldn't have to put up with a mean dog. I say dead coon and they leave it alone and it also works good for calling em off a tree when I'm summer hunting. I'm too old to leash dogs.

We ALWAYS let the dogs wool the coon they earned it and NEVER EVER get growly over it because from early on they have learned to share from the start. My dogs can share a box, share a pen, share a doghouse, share food, share a tree and share a coon. I have hunted 45 yrs and never heard such a thing as getting the coon away from them as quick as possible! Basically you are telling me you have no control over your dogs and no ability or knowledge to train them to share. It has to start young like I said before. Not trying to be a smart azz but thats the way myself and the guys I hunt with operate.

Id put a foot to him too and why should you subject your hound to that! If he is reluctant to control his dog then I would not hunt with him.

Doug, the reason I take control of the coon as quick as it dies has to do with the dogs recognizing I am the boss under any and all circumstances, not cause they can't share. I haven't leashed a dog off a tree or anywhere else since the early 1980's. It works for me.

i always do like lyle does when pleasure hunting...i snap a lead on the dogs but if they are broke dogs and not going to leave the tree, i let them keep treeing...

like lyle said, the leash is what i am reaching for if something goes wrong...bad hit on a coon and it bails, dog fight, etc etc...easier and safer to grab for the lead than a collar...

and like was said, a dead coon will bring out possessive properties with some dogs...our 2 younguns will still stretch a coon out together and not get possessive...another dog we used to hunt though as soon as she heard a gun shot she'd clear the tree...that was HER coon coming out...ive never seen her bite or fight but she would bark, growl, face bark, show her teeth, snap etc...

gotta be careful when it comes to knockin coon down..if they will play nice i let em both chew on it at the same time..

I agree we leash the dogs back we had one coon fall on a dog years ago but then let em have a chew. Some dogs wanna pluck the coon and we dont want to ruin the fur so gotta watch for that.

I used to bang my head against the wall trying to cure dog's personality traits. Then one day I had an epiphany..........sometimes it's easier to work around a problem than to turn it into a battle of wills that I have to win.

Heck, tie him back before you shoot........problem solved!
