1,300 jobs going the way of Twinkies

The 911th Air Wing in Pittsburgh has announced that the base is back on the closure list. Over 300 civilians and 1000 reservist will lose their source of income. Seems to me that the same deal was pulled on the 911th as Benghazi, shut your mouth and it will go away after the elections. Omama doesn't need Pittsburgh anymore...

Randy, those 1000 reservist will not lose their job (unless they were employed as a civilian on the base too).............if base closes, they will muster elsewhere. Base closing doesn't put reservist or active duty out of a job - just moves them.

I will add that I am no Obama fan and did not vote for him...........but look up BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure Commission) which is now done every 8 years for the 2005 BRAC (During Bush's Presidency).

BRAC doesn't mean all jobs are lost..............alot are moved.

Where one community hurts from the loss, another commmunity gains from the new jobs.

My wife are both from a Military family where as kids we moved around every 3 years. I was also Military and we live in a Military town.

The base employee rate here is still growing from the 2005 round of BRAC. It created an abundance of jobs........due to the increase of jobs, infrastructure had to be increased (housing, hotels, and etc...), which created more jobs.

Timing? BRAC is done every 8 years -- Last time was 2005 + 8 years = 2012. Even if McCain had won that election, it would still happen.

Your wrong and right. Not the first to come but there will be more since it is now done every 8 years REGARDLESS who the President is.

Guys, BRAC is nothing new.

Here is Bush's sign off on the 2005 Brac:

http://www.defense.gov/brac/pdf/Pre...ress15Sep05.pdf

His signature is right under the line that says: I certify that I approve all the recommendations contained in the Commission's report.

Interns of timing I was referring to delaying it until after the election. An alot of these are cutbacks not normal protocal

Wrong on this one, Buckshot. He is downsizing the military. My daughter, after 3 tours of the desert, 8 years of active duty, and a measly county job, landed a GS9 job in her career field at the 911th. Now, she will be unemployed. Yes, SOME, of those reservists might find homes somewhere else, but, there is no guarantee and their lives might be flipped completely around having to drive ungodly hours for a weekend drill. I'm quite knowledgeable about the BRAC. Our base survived 2. One BRAC the USAF tried an old Army trick. They switched the numbers with another base they wanted to keep open....a senator with more pull in that area. Thanks to Carnegie University and a local coalition put together to fight the BRAC the Air Force was shown their foley. The purpose of downsizing and BRACs is elimination of jobs. Not everyone gets to move or has follow on. A host of people are forced into early retirement or are bought out.

Randy, BRAC has been around for years.........this is nothing new. Our base and community is growing because of the 2005 BRAC. Besides the jobs that have been added to the base because of BRAC, the community job market has grown from the 2005 BRAC.

Like I mentioned in a previous post, while some communities suffer after BRAC, others gain from BRAC.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree on BRAC

This isn't a BRAC move. This was part of the Obama administration ordered downsizing that came out last spring. This was done during budgetary talks. There was so much furor over it it was tabled....supposedly until the actual BRAC in April 2013. The Air Force in its infinite wisdom knew they looked bad in the last two BRACs so they set the base up for failure. They moved the upgraded C-130's out of Pittsburgh and replaced them with antiquated aircraft driving the maintenance costs up. Awful ironic is the fact that in Omama's first run Pittsburgh as a whole voted against him...

What is good for Huntsville is not always good for Pittsburgh.

Randy, you realize that this is the 3rd time this base has been on the closure list in the last 17 years?

It was on the 1995 closure list, the 2005 closure list and now on the 2012 closure list. That base has been on the closure list 3 times now in the last 17 years.

Not like talks of closing this base is anything new. Not like this is all on Obama. 13 years before Obama was President, this base was on the list. 3 years before Obama was President, this base was on the list a 2nd time.

You can blame Obama all you want, but fact is this base has been on tack to be to be on the closure list now under 3 different Presidents. It has survived the previous closures list (Both Dem and Rep Presidency's).

Randy, I will be straight up honest............your right what is good for Huntsville is not always good for Pittsburgh --- I am not worried about Pittsburgh -- I am for my town which has benefited from BRAC and also not only has loss to previous BRAC's in the past but also with NASA. We've taken hits there as well. Just recently we took major hits with NASA.

Here is some tidbits on the past closures in the last 25 years. 1989, 1991, 1993, 1995, and 2005 -- How many of those were Dem. Presidents and Rep. Presidents?

Hint, 4 out 5 were the same party...........and it wasn't Obama's party.

Also, from everything I read on this 911th Air Wing, isn't it the US AIR FORCE that wants to close it since they are retiring the aging C-130H?

A little tidbit on the aging C-130H -- They were retired from the Royal Australian Air Force as well this year.

The base was set up for closure. After the second BRAC the Air Force transferred the newer retrofitted C-130s to another base and moved the antiquated 130's in. In both previous BRACs the coalition dug into expenditures and proved the Air Force wrong when they threw the numbers on the table. By moving the antiquated aircraft in the Air Force new maintenance costs would be driven up. The base's only real expense is $20,000 a year for fire protection. Deicing, snow removal, and runway maintenance is absorbed by the Pittsburgh International Airport. As knowledgeable as you are of these issues you can read between the lines that somewhere politics is driving this. $20,000 is peanuts for operational costs. It ain't over till the fat lady sings so we'll see where it goes.
Track - I see you were an Air Force vet. Were you a 3 and outter?
