Yes indeed, cities are brooders for Liberals. Let me tell you a few reasons:
1] Great education. Yes there are failing inner city schools, but the majority of urbanites have access to a great education. And not just K-12. Obviously the majority of great colleges and universities are in urban areas. And once graduated from a great university, most of the highest educated grads stay in the city for employment reasons. So on a daily basis, our kids get to chat with adults who are PhD scientists, MDs, CEOs, CFOs, accountants, lawyers, engineers, etc.
2] We live in close proximity to people who are very different than we are. This makes us appreciate the logic of tolerance on a level that those who live in rural or small town can't. If your neighbor is LBGT or an ethnic minority or someone who deals with mental health issues, you just learn to deal with it. If you have a Somali neighbor that likes to butcher a goat in their back yard every so often then you realize that they will be tolerant when you want to skin some coon off of your maple tree. And our close proximity makes us realize that we are just better to all get along.
3] Gubt run services: Mass transit works. Large public parks with great walking trails are the gem of any major city. Public water and sewer is so much more cost effective than everyone having their own well and septic system. This makes understand "the economies of scale", and appreciate that there are many things that gubt can do better than individuals.
4] and speaking of services- all of the needy and mentally ill from small town USA migrate to the big city. Your shell shocked veterans end up close to the best VA hospitals, of which most are in cities. Your drug addicts come to cities for treatment. We do our best to rehabilitate them. Often we succeed. Which makes us understand that NOBODY should be just thrown to the curb like these shell shocked vets and druggies and the mentally ill. We know you all claim that through charity that you will care for them. But you didn't or they wouldn't have migrated here. So this builds the liberal mindset that we need social welfare and safety nets that are gubt run to catch those who fall through the cracks.
5] The shell shocked veterans tell us stories. And it makes us understand and hate war. And we deal with immigrants who have come here to escape the ravages of wars in their home countries. And many of these wars were the end result of our US foreign policies. The scars on their bodies and the far away look in their eyes is just like our own veterans. And because these Vets and immigrants live in close proximity they become friends.
And we realize that we could just all get along. If we just tried a little harder.
And here are the reasons that middle America is the cradle of conservatives....
1) Education- Middle Americans attend local K-12 schools where parents are a part of the learning process. Not only are the children given a good "reading, writing, and arithmetic" education, they are also provided moral guidance by parents and community. They learn that hard work is the path to prosperity. Some of them go off to college, and many of them return to their home town, to family values. Many of them go to agricultural schools, and come home ready to roll up their sleeves, and put in hours of blood, sweat, and tears in order to become successful. They are our home town bankers, lawyers, doctors, and farmers. They may not have an MBA, but they start up their own small businesses, and provide a job for their neighbors.
2. ) Middle Americans are the ones that raise the goats and sell them to the Somali's, the chickens and pigs for the folks from central America and from the east. Not only do they happily do business with them, they invite them to church and welcome them into their homes. They do so not out of hatred or ill will, but out of "being a neighbor" and having good family values. They don't see it as being tolerant, but instead out of equality. See the different ethnic groups in middle America, they share the same value system..that of hard work, prosperity through sweat equity, and the same view of equality. They don't segregate themselves into closed communities, and view their American counterparts as equals as well.
3) They view "big government" as an intrusion, not as a program that is "owed" them. They view public transportation as something that they get to pay for, but don't get to use...they carpool, share rides, or pay see that they are the ones that actually support the automotive company by purchasing vehicles, yet they are also the ones that pay excise taxes on those vehicles, gasoline, and fuel. Their tax dollars were used to bail out the auto companies, and they also went out and purchased a new pickup truck to help out as well. They pay for the water wells to be drilled, so that the cattle can have water, the crops can be irrigated so the inner city folks can have their Big Mac and fries. Not only that, but they pay for the electricity to run the pumps to get the water out of the ground, but have to navigate their way through government red tape to get permits to drill the water wells. They have to manage the septic systems according to a bureaucratic nightmare of EPA peculation tests. You want to talk about "economy of scale"....they understand that the death of the family farm is about economy of scale. That no longer can you farm to feed your own family on 120 acres..you must not be a "factory farm" with millions of dollars of debt to farm thousands of acres because the margin per acre is so small that it does not pay to farm small scale any longer. They listen to the arguments about oil prices, while paying $4.00 a gallon for diesel fuel to prepare the ground, plant the crops, then harvest them....while doing their darndest to keep grain prices low..to continue to grow pork, while losing $50.00 a head because they know that the country depends on them.
4) The "needy" and "mentally ill" don't all migrate to the city....many of them are cared for in the homes of family and close friends. Family values ensure that they get the care that they need and it becomes a community effort to ensure that families don't go hungry. Those that are not willing to help themselves, yes...they are the first to seek out the entitlement programs that are there for the giving. The same folks that insist that the State run Mental Health care system was disbanded because it was "inhumane" now want to complain that the former patients are living under bridges and using up every bed in the homeless shelter. The violent ones end up in county jails instead of being supervised and getting treatment. Churches work to ensure that nobody goes hungry with local food banks, rather than making sure that folks have money for cigaretts and beer by giving them food stamps and free housing. If you are willing to work, someone will find something for you to DO...real work...and make sure that your family does not go hungry or you don't get the medical treatment, or even psychiatric treatment they need.
5) Home town heroes come home from war and don't tell "stories" to try to convince us how horrible war is. Home town America already knows how terrible it is. They instead put those horrible memories on the back shelf, roll up their sleeves and get to work. They will remind their children and grandchildren how GREAT this country is and they will suffer in silence with their memories. They don't flock to the VA for assistance or medical care, instead they work hard for what they have and use it wisely. Each and every one of them served out of a sense of loyalty to their country. They hold no ill will to the "enemy" other than the threat to freedom and the American way of life....to the pursuit of happiness and liberty.
6) Few among them hold ill will towards anyone who is willing to pull their own weight, if able. If unable, they are the first ones to offer a helping hand. They are the ones that hold the door for the next person out the door, or open the door for someone at the local convenience store...they are the ones that ask "how ya doin?" and are genuinely interested in how others are doing. they believe that life begins at conception, because there are NO unwanted babies in the community, they know someone who wants a baby, and that life is to be cherished, not a matter of convenience.
I could go on and on....
