my experance is females usally start earlyer ,but all that just depends on how a dog is bred ..and if u get lucky on picking the earlyest starting pup from any litter also,,lol

i try to breed my own stock and if fooled with either sex normally start running their own coon at around 6-12 months old..

most people got away from the real old bloodlines as they didnt want to wait till they were around 18-24months old before the light switch came on in their heads,...

hope this helps u..

jmo i would rather hunt a gyp the seem to be a little smarter and most start alittle earlier than a dog but i have seen some that was plain worthless in my day but i would rather own a gyp than a dog the heat cycle thing can be a pain i had 1 gyp that came in right before coon season always missed the 1st week with her when it gets right down to it i look at a dog like i do a horse it depends on how big a heart they got you cant make a horse pull if they dont have the heart to want to do it you cant make a dog hunt if thier heart and into it thats where we get these pot lickers from people wont cull them then some dummy breeds them to sell pups and it goes on and on lol

i wish my bitch would run a deer i would pet her up good.i never seen him run nothing off but he is the right age never had
them run much off till 3.i keep 1 on him but there a big bend in
there if he comes off the creek i can see him with the tracker flashing and call him or tone if needed.i cant whistle so i trained
him in the back yard to come when toned.
