Anyone familiar with the area? Looking at a vacation there next year.

You will not find a better place to vacation than the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area. A great place for family vacations!!

If you are getting a beach house, I would stay on West Beach. If a condo, I like Orange Beach, just not a many beach houses at Orange Beach. Not crazy about the Ft. Morgan area, too far from restaurants and stuff.
It will be crowded any time during the summer months. The latter part of August will be a little better as AL schools start around the 15th. If you are not limited to the summer, September/October is my favorite beach time.
I have been to Gulf Shores many times, but am very partial to Destin, FL. The prettiest beaches and water in the on the Gulf Coast.

Check flights into Pensacola, FL. It is a shorter drive than Mobile. NOt sure who all flys in and out of there.

You will not have a problem finding a charter as there are a lot of charters and great fishing. You may want to book ahead of time if you choose to go in red snapper season (usuallly the months of June/July)
