I hear alot of old timers as well as my granpa talk about how they used to coon hunt with triggs. My granpa tells me the best dog he ever owned was a trigg. From what I recall he describes them more as a cur type dog than a hound although from what little info I have been able to find on the Internet about them they are listed as hounds. Does anyone know anything about these dogs? Are they still around, are they still used as coon dogs, looks, mouth, etc? Has anyone ever owned or hunted with one?

Havent seen any around here in years. They were used as fox and deer hounds around here in the seventies. Never saw any used for coon here but that dont mean they werent.

Friend of mine bought some of a guy in Utah (cat hunter) and shipped them to Wv for bear hunting. They say they can run for days, Still pups so we will see next fall.

my grandad fox hunted alot and he had Triggs, July and crossbred hounds and when alot of em got older and couldnt keep up with the pack they'd fall out of a race and tree coons.

some of em made pretty good coon/treedogs if ya singled em out and shot coons out to em.

I Had a couple a few years ago for deer hounds BEST dogs I ever had gave them to a friend of mine and he has been raising some pups each year he had been totaly satisfied with them and everybody keeps asking about them all the pups start early and have the biggest hearts they will run for days if I was to ever get anymore deer hounds it would be triggs as for the color and size the color of these are Black and redish brown with little bit of white and the size is like a small frame hound

I've a friend that more than his share of Triggs and none of them are as small as a beagle long legged and bred to fly. They are used for bear,coon and fox and tree enough that you'll find them, they all are registerd with I believe the hound and horn? registry for Triggs. Yes i've hunted with them and if your looking I might just be able to hook you up to talk with my pal. He is very Trigg knowledgable.

ran fox and deer with triggs many yrs. loved them. saw 1 trigg male that was mean so they cut him and gave him to old man on the farm. he quit runnin fox and started treein coon was a super coon treeer but would only hunt if the old man was with u

Triggs are used by big game hunters all over the country. I would not say they are just bigger than a beagle. The ones I have seen are as tall or taller than coonhounds.

My grandfather fox hunted ran Trigg and July hounds spent many nights standing around a fire with grandaddy listening to em. All the Triggs he had were as big as the July hounds, but most would be a reddish brown in color with a white ring around neck, most were squelly chop mouth, run all night long, most were one man dogs. This might not describe all of them, this is the way grandaddys were. A older gentleman here in town still runs a few in the fox pen.

the only ones i have ever seen look like the ones in the old pics of the horses following the red and white hounds look alot like walkers but more foxhoundish very racy looking dogs almost like a whippet type body with hound head and chest

we used to raise running walkers and go to field trials all over the country and the triggs and the july dogs were fast but seems like they never won any of the hunts they just couldnt hang with the walker dogs in a three day hunt now not running them down just sayin is all get you a Chase magazine"thats the foxhound mag" and youll see what i say is true. never heard one tree a coon but hey anything is possible ive had people tell me there bulldog or there lab will tree so who knows

The best coondog I ever went to the woods with was a pure Trigg female. I could write a book on things I've seen "Ole Queen"do. She's been gone over 40 yrs. and yet She is still the dog I use as a measuring stick !

Use your google, The Trigg National Fox Hound Assoc. Is still active. The national field trial was just held in early Oct as usual and was held in Manchestor Ky. There are a few breeders getting up to speed on the internet and we will be creating a Trigg website soon. There are breeders that would love to sell you some triggs. My dad ran Triggs & Goodman Hounds on fox in the 40's & 50's..The Triggs were not any different in size than any other hound..As far as treeing, some fox hounds would switch off the fox chase and tree a coon. That happened to all breeds of fox hounds.

There is dome Trigg breeders listed in the Hunters Horn magazine. They're bred for fox/coyote running but apparently some tree too.

When I was at UKC a gentleman from Stevensville, Michigan used to come into the office. He had Trigg foxhounds and be said all of his dogs would naturally tree. Maybe Kellam can remember his name.

used to see them here with the fox hunters but they must have lost favor but as a boy I loved to hear them run the foxes in the pine forest near my house. HEY STEVE , catch any fish this yr. I thought about getting up with u just never made the call.
