I haven't hunted in Tulsa yet, but NE Oklahoma has some pretty good hunting. Especially around the lakes.

Miami/Vinita is pretty good if you get in the pecan groves.


We are having a hunt in Talaquah OK in March. ( Western English)

When they told me where it was going to be I said, " Talaquah? Thats 1/2 way down river!!!!!!!!!!!!

we have some pretty good hunting in stilwell, about 11/2 hours east of tulsa, come over some time and we will try it. hills and hollows.

I lived at Broken Arrow & Mannford for about 30 years, & there are some decent spots left to hunt but they are getting fewer & fewer, just like everywhere else. I think that you will find that most of the Public Hunting areas around the Lakes are hunted to death? The best thing to do is, is get out & hunt you some spots up on your own, & watch who you take in there. Like larrypoe said, the Pecan Groves are the best, but you will have trouble getting permission to hunt in some of them. One of my best spots was south of Bixsby, on the Miller Ranch which had Snake Creek running through it. They have sold alot of it off now, & I'm not sure how much of it is left to hunt? I always liked the area's down south of Bristow along Big & Little Deep Fork Rivers. They weren't Rivers just big creeks. There is some public hunting down there also. A friend of mine & I treed 24 in a big Pecan Grove one night southwest of Beggs, in less than 3 hrs. Had 12 in one tree. There was also some good hunting in spots out around Pawnee, on Black Bear Creek.

If your really into coon hunting & do alot of it, I would try to live either northeast or southwest of Tulsa. The Claremore/Oologah or Sapulpa/Bristow area's

Years ago my old man lived down there near Tulsa and we coon hunted all over the place. Now, I am talkin over 20 years ago so, I don't nothin about it no more. Mr. Wittenborn, I noticed you said you live there for 30 years. I was wondering if maybe you and my dad knew each other or maybe new some of the same people. He worked out on a horse ranch out on 75 I believe it was. A man named Gerald Wells owned it at the time I believe. I believe my dad even hunted some dogs for him at the time when he worked for him. I ain't real sure about none of this actually, but he ain't here right now to correct me if I was wrong.

Those big pecan bottoms at Beggs were my old hunting grounds but they are off limits now. Ducks Unlimited bought them out. I also had a few other places south of Tulsa, but they are no longer available. Public hunting by the deep fork is still there but it's awful hunting. Plenty of coon there, but it is tough going even for coonhunters. I've swam that darn deep fork before, but in the past few years, it's been so dry, it's down pretty much. There just isn't much hunting around Tulsa - you'll have to drive 40 minutes any direction for places to hunt.

I knew Gerald & his son Freddy Wells fairly good, but don't recall meeting your dad???? I might have met him, & just forgot, I don't know???? OLD AGE does that to a guy, they say. LOL

Those coonhounds were Freddy's FFA project when he was in High School. Gerald had that big MOTOR HOME, & if there was a big Hunt somewhere that Freddy wanted to go to, they loaded that MOTOR HOME up, & off they went. Just talked to a friend of mine this morning, from Glennpool & he had some pasture ground rented from Gerald.

Cheryl, a friend of mine named Scott Reed from over at Mannford, was telling me about a month ago that you could cross Big Deep Fork just about anywhere. If you run into Scott, ask him about the time that he & I were down there hunting one night, south & a little west of Gypsy when Big Deep Fork was coming out of it's banks, & almost had us trapped back in there. We wadded water about waist deep getting out of there. You could see the water running away from the River & it was coming up fast. IT WAS GETTING A LITTLE SPOOKY.

larrypoe, when you go down to Tahlequah watch out for those RYALS BOYS. Ole Bob & Dee (Glen) are the drizzling SH!!'S, if you know what I mean. Be sure to tell them "THAT I DIDN'T SAY HELLO". Really they are pretty good ole boy's. I doubt if either one is doing much hunting anymore????

Freddy Wells had some nice hounds. Plus Point Blue Boy Bruiser was realy on his way.

I have seen some nice dogs off him.

You might remember the Thurber boys as well, Jim and Elmer. Or there dad. Thats where the dog that started John Ferrari's Timber Valley English origenaly came from. Thurbers Blue Bell, She was off of Dick Johnsons HamboneII and Thurbers Eve.

Freddy always seemed to have a decent dog around. Course he had dad's money backing him up too.

I don't recall the Thurber's, but like I said before, the ole MEMORY is not as good as it used to be????

Sounds like your experiences with the Deep Fork were as "fun" as mine. I had an older dog treed on the other side (why do coon always tree on the other side?) and a pup clinging to me so's not to drown too. It was a stupid thing for me to do hunting by myself.

I used to live in Tulsa, when I was there the Hunting was good all around Tulsa, N-S-E-W Some really great folks also. Unless things have changed I think you just jump in the truck and start driving and asking people if you can hunt their place. Thats what I did. I found Good Hunting and Better People.

Last time I saw Freddy was at a hunt in Beggs about 6 years ago and he was hardly hunting then. I think with his car business and other things, he just didn't have the time as I recall.

I live in Owasso, which is about 10 miles north of Tulsa. I started coonhunting about 4 years ago around here. Here is my take on it. There some public land within an hour's drive that is decent hunting, but is it hunted hard and the coons are pretty thin in those areas. As far as private land, there is some really great hunting places, especially north of town in some nice river bottoms, but most of it is leased land by farmers or ranchers. Ranchers would rather have coons than dogs on their land, so they aren't crazy about letting folks hunt on that land, unless they have known a guy for years. Meaning, there are guys around that have good places to hunt, that a new guy isn't going to get permission to go. As far as clubs. I am a member of the Washington COunty Coon hunters Association which meets in Ochelata, just south of Bartlesville. It's about 30 minutes from my place and I have met some good folks there.

Hey Guys, I've lived in N.E. Oklahoma for 44 years, The hunting in general is average to or a little better than anyones. We have real good holes and some poor ones. The bottoms in Nowata are still a good place to tree a coon, but don't go there for a "pleasure" hunt, It won't be a pleasure. The good lord was mad at hunters when he made them bottoms.

John, I told you for years to get out of that flat land down there and hunt these hills. You never would listen and when you did come N.E. you forgot to stop and wound up a yank again. Some folks can't be helped, just to hard headed I guess.

Weve sure had a rough start to the new year here, Burried dad a week ago Wednesday and on Wednesday my oldest brother had a heart attack and wound up having 5 by passes, he is gonna be ok so I guess we should be thankfull for that. The preacher at the hospital said The good lord wouldn't give us more than we can carry, aint it amazing what a feller can tote.

Guess I better let you get on with your dinner, I know how upset them folks at Shady Grove Retirement Village get when you hold them up. LOL.. Later Brother.

By the way, I have got limbs down all over my yard. over 2 inches of Ice and more coming. Electricity went out at 8 pm last night and came back on at 530 this am. Thank god for the back up space heater.

you are having a string of bad luck!!!!!!! I hope things will get better quick for you.

Roger Melson called this morning, & he told me that it was pretty rough out there, & like you said, more on the way. We've had alot of rain here, but no ice yet. The ice got within about 20 miles of here last night, but didn't quite make here. So much for getting back into my honey holes, with the creeks out, I guess it's back to the hills????

I was supposed to meet Scott Reed at Lebanon, Mo. to pick that pup out Neosho River Rudy up, but we called it off because of the weather. Talk at you later.

I can still remember my old man helping build the kennels and stuff around there. We lived in the trailer hous that had a roof and add on to it with a carport also. I used to run around that ranch all day and night. We had catfish in every pond and it seemed like a big adventurous place to a little boy. I took my brother back out there about 10 years ago and seen Gerald and Freddy, but things have changed quite a bit. They had cars parked out front and a bunch of cattle out in the pastures. Didn't look anything like that when I was there. I may be wrong about some of the facts, but I do remember my old man hunting quite of few of their dogs for them during the week and such. As a matter of fact, I believe that is what ruined my dad's relationship with Gerald. He kind of left on some bad terms, but all is forgotten now between them. Gerald wanted my dad to hunt all night and work on the ranch all day. He just couldn't hardly do it. There was another man around there that my dad was pretty good friends with, but I can't remember his name. My dad had a Walker dog named Sam out there at the time and an old Blue dog that I think he callled Bo. I want to say the man that my dad was buddies with was named Foster. I will find out more info and let ya know, I just keep forgetting to ask him.

With the terrible ice storm around there, the hunting is going to be tougher.

Trees and limbs are down in massive numbers.

It is going to be rough sledding in the woods around there for years to come.

He was a fella named Jimmy Don Foster. Anyhow, my old man was crackin up when ya'll was talkin bout that motor home. I just called him at work and told him about the dogs you mentioned. He knew them all and quite a few more and has hunted all of them. He actually knew some of the names ya'll said too.

Used to hunt with him some, matter of fact I'll tell a couple of stories about him.

He, Roger Melson, & I were BRIDGE HOPPING one night, down south of Bristow, around Big Deep Fork. The reason we were BRIDGE HOPPING, was because Jimmy Don being so big & over weight, didn't like to get to far from the truck. From about 9:00 o'clock on, until we quit about 1:00 o'clock, every time we changed spots, Jimmy Don would start SNORING between spots. One time we didn't go over a mile down the road & he was SNORING. He could fall asleep faster than anyone that I ever knew.

Another time I met him, Randy Arnold, & Billy Joe Roberts, down in that same area. They had 4 dogs & I had 2. Well we were standing at the trucks & the dog's split up. Theirs treed on one side of the road, about a quarter of a mile, & mine got treed about a half to three quarters on the other side. They wanted to knock theirs out, but didn't have a rifle. Jimmy Don asked if I had one, & I said yes & gave it to him. It was a nice 22 bolt action Nylon 66. They went their way & I went to my dogs. When I got back to the truck, they were waiting on me with my RIFLE IN 3 PIECES.The other 2 guy's got to laughing & said that Jimmy Don had to help their 4 dog's kill the coon, & got to hitting the coon with the rifle, & broke it. They said that they would get me another one just like it, & I'M STILL WAITING.
