Treeing Squirrel Dens at night

What are some of the best ways to break a squirrel treeing dog at night . Whipping the fire out of her has only resulting in her stopping barking when You get close . Hopefully dont want to make her take a dirt nap lol . At first I thought she was the slick treeingest fool id seen . If I hunt her on a night where it was very windy that afternoon and squirrels didnt stir much she is wonderful . I didnt recognize what was happening at first cause all the trees were huge , lots of leaves . It seems as if she is impatient and not as skilled in hunting for a coon to track . When she doesnt strike a coon in 15 or 20 minutes she goes into squirrel mode . In retrospect it appears too many turnout coons and feeder drops contributed to problem . I had no dog to start her with at time so did the best I could . The only thing I know to do now is maybe shoot a squirrel and drag around and let her out and shock her off of it . Id like to hear some of the different ways people have had success breaking them . I doubt seriously if anyone could stand to see the thrashings shes got for it but she has to tree lol.

It's gonna be hard to believe but if I have a dog that is treeing bs grab him by the jaws look him in the eyes an say NO then pull him off tree a few coons turned alose without her seeing them might be good let her run and tree them shoot some of them out on her wound one so she has Alittle fight on her hands I've know a few people who do the ecoller on the tree but both dogs never treed as good as they did that way I don't use a ecollar just the looken in the eyes and maybe a switch from time to time

she might be worth a fortune as a squirrel dog . It was crazy from 7 months to 13 months she treed 42 coons solo . then she went about 7 to 8 trees a night couldnt find any coons , always big trees lots of leaves never treeing on a bush or obvious slik . Then one day I put a blinker on her and she was going up every tree in the woods stopped running tracks all together . She would tree the occasional coon . You talking about a big locate that You can call at the start of and hold all the pressure in the world . But it doesnt do a bit of good to go to a night hunt and tree several ccons then minus out on slik / squirrel . The hunting on windy evevenings when it became really apparant what she was doing . Before I thought well I heard these modern dogs are tree happy but shes a squirrel freak haha! If I can break this she would be my favorite as she can out hustle get lonely anything . When in coon mode hard to beat .

Been there. This is what I did and it worked for me. kill one , tie it to her collar so she can't get to it. Put her in your hauling box and leave her there with it for as many days as you can stand. Let her out to go do her buisness feed and water and back in the box, with it tied to her collar. Hopefully she will get tired of the smell , you will too. When your done with that , keep breaking scent on her collar and face. JMO.....Good Luck

I wouldn't say all modern dogs are tree happy idiots though some people don't breed for a balanced dog they want these tree dogs the last two TREE DOGS I had couldn't track worth a crap didn't slick a lot just if coon wasn't moving leave them at the house.

i hunt my dogs on squirrel during the day and coon at night. Never had a problem with squirrels at night. Only remember 3 times ever and all 3 were on the outside. Got shots at 2 of them. The other was in a tree with a coon. I bout ruined too many dogs with the shocker at the tree. It has worked with mine just spending a lot of time letting them know what you want and eventually getting across to them when you want it.

Im in the same boat with ya. Mine was as accurate as I've ever fooled with. Then one night boom. She made tree after tree after tree after tree and no coon. Then next night I actually saw the squirrel. Im trying different stuff. She's doing better but still after a while she don't find one she blows up treed. I tried my best not to teach this one any bad stuff. I've only shot her 2 coon. Haven't got her all hyped by petting on tree. Pretty much. I don't know why the crap she started doing it

I have started 100s of hound pups on squirrels. Some, I have had to break off of squirrels so they would not tree them at night. Take her out in the day time and light her up if she barks on anything, (it will be a squirrel). Then, take her out at night and drop a coon down to her. The smart ones get the message real quick. She must have a pretty good nose to be treeing squirrels at night.

A top squirrel dog will sell quicker and for more money than a coon dog will these days.

She is out of Triple X and a Nite Ch female out of Stylish Harry . my old dog died when she was ready to start , so all I could do was trap coon turn them loose when the coon was gone I would go get her and let her find him . I probably wasnt creative enough in making her search harder for the track and probably did over praise her some , and to make matters worse I believe all those big squirrel dens I squalled too much and she interpreted that as praise . She may be the most natural pressure packed little female Ive seen but I made a lot of mistakes with this one . I had stopped hunting alot while my son played baseball travel ball the college ball and when I got back into it my old dog had really got old . He died and pulled out his entry card and he was 14 years old . Time flies . I whipped cussed discussed to the point when I figured out what was happening that she would tree till I got close then shut up but has so much tree in her that she wont leave just bounces and stays if not for the garmin I guess shed be there all night lol. Most of her problems are man made Ill try shooting some squirrels and dragging then shock her but Im thru stomping on her she will just be my squirrel dog . Ive always wanted one . The sad part is she really has what You want when in coon mode . Cant drag her off tree and can straight up fly . Runs to catch . Ive since built or have the start of some really solid females in my kennel it would be awesome to straighten her out . I may lead her into some coons and see a couple hit the ground but not too many coons will die for a problem dog .
