how far would you drive???

How far would you drive to breed to a stud?

I know I've made some pretty long road trips in the past and it's been well worth it.

But how far have/would most of you drive to breed to a stud?

A lot of hit or miss to drive a long ways to not get on right day. Always better to send the bitch to the breeder.

AI seems to be the way to go @ $4 a gallon.

Now I'm guessing why our clubs got a law suit lol. Your boy gotta pay for those long trips he's been sending you on lol!

i've never had a female bred. but if i do i will drive a long ways to get with a good stud. just how far would depend on how great the stud is and how well he would fit with my dog. i hope to get a good puppy soon. if she turns out to be a good dog, in my opinion because i don't competition hunt, i will breed her to upgrade to a better dog.

Already did that. Got it doubled up. You just gotta wait and see what we might get from next AI breeding... Done in the backyard.

As far as it takes to do what I need. That's the reason I've got what I do. Distance is never a factor just the quality of the hound, it's reproducing ability, and it's breeding. 2,000 mile trip not usual.

For me there isnt a limit if I thought the stud was worth it. Having said that let me also say that with todays technology there isnt a reason to drive further than your nearest vet.

I'm glad you guys have had success with AI, we haven't.

Seems like AI is the way of the future. Problem is, vet's around here aren't any more than rabies shot clinics. all they can do is give basic shots and it doesn't matter what's wrong with the dog, they give you prednisone and an antibiotic...

We've even taken females to major universities (both almost 4 hours away) and had no success with AI. So we're pretty reluctant to invest any more into that route.

Bitzel sound like he knows what he's doing, maybe we'll have to give him a shot.

IMO there is a lot of value in this statement.

I have hunted with many pups out of top studs at the time...For every decent one I could show you a better one out of a no-name local cross.

Selling pups and getting them in the right hands is another matter......

Driving to a good stud.

I guess I would drive as far as I had to to get what I wanted, but now I just have to walk out to my own kennel. Lol

What amazes me is how many people drive all over the country to breed but are blind to what's in there own neck of the woods. It seems that so many people think that because they drove half way across the country and paid a ton in fuel and stud fee that the pups will be better. It's all in how those two dogs genetics match up. I'm not jealous or afraid to give credit where credit is due, that's how I ended up with my Dozer dog. He came from a good friend of mine. Hey.... Sometimes it is what it is..... "If you can't beat em, join em".

So for anyone who feels like taking a ride, come check out Dozer. Lol

i drove to Missouri to breed to Trackman...about 1400mi and 24hr round trip...

got there late evening..dropped the bitch and Trackman did his thing..put the bitch to bed and Curt put me up for the nite...bright and early the next morning we were on the road home...April we had our litter...

18 months old now and my buddy just made his pup a nite champion with 3 first place wins in 3 hunts...my pup is doing just as well..just havent taken him to hunts yet...

worth it in my book...both our younguns are doing real well...

LOL, I drove a buddy all the way to southwest Pennsylvania so he could breed his female to a stud dog there. He paid half the gas ... that is all I would take.

I also drove a buddies female all the way to southern Illinois so she could get breed. He couldn't get off work.

Personally, I have driven about 7 hours one way, but I was willing to drive all the way to southern Alabama once. Unfortunately, my dog wasn't PKC registered and the stud dog owner wasn't interested.

I do agree that many times local dogs will fit the bill, but in my case I was trying to double up through line breeding.

Larry, I wish there was something worth breeding to in SW Pennsylvania so I could quit driving to Missouri and Arkansas.
