what your views on young dogs?

I like dogs that are trashy as young dogs seems they make the better trailing dog as they age an once the switch gets turned on that coon is what they are sapposed to hunt (don't use shock collars seen more ruined with them then helped) they end up being the cream of the crop it just seems most guys give up on a good dog if it ain't treeing like a pro at a year old or to what they want the dog to but someone else gets the dog an the trashy cull turns into a heck of a coon dog once it gets the hang of it. I've herd most of your top studs were trashy dogs starten out but had someone that new how to turn the switch an all hell broke lose.

Everyone is different but I prefer mine to be naturally straight. Or at least easy to break off fast game.

Yup. We didn't breed for nearly 100 years to run junk as a pup!

I agree with the OP. Pups that are gamey turn into better, more consistent hounds IMO.

Before I bred a female to Mojo last winter I talked to some guys who were hunting Mojo pups and one consistent thing I heard from a lot of them was that they were trashy to start but once they got settled in to coons and nothing but coons they were tough hounds.

I have a 10 month old redbone female right now that is running and treeing half the animals in the woods. Once she gets straightened out she is going to be a good one. Just pure raw trailing and treeing ability oozing out of her.

Every track dog that ever impressed me , and there was not many , were a little "trashy" when young.
There are alot of dogs out there that will tree a coon. BUT , there are very few REAL track dogs anymore.

It's whatever you want I guess. Some people expect a puppy to start off early lieing and as he learns he will learn how to tree a coon and turn into a "good one". I find that puppies are honest as can be and don't learn how to grab a tree and lie till they are three years old. But, Whatever.

Trashy Pups

I don't care if a pup runs trash as long as they run to catch! In my experiance the pups that run like that make better track dogs in the end. Not necessarily better coon treeing dogs but better track dogs. I have had several pups that where naturally straight and very tree minded. Several of these pups where outstanding in thick coon and could just pop up or layup coon after coon. However on a tough night in february with a hard running rutting boar coon those track driving superstars that started as trashy culls always steal the show. I just tend to prefer the kind that finishes into a super track dog.
