What kind of snake?

I have had dogs get bit by copperheads ever since I started hunting and have not seen a bit of difference in them. I have one old dog here that has been bit 6 or 8 times.

Cotton mouth bite two years ago and the dog was back at it in a few nights. It never seemed to change him.

Had one get it six times one summer, then win the state hunt in September.I think every one I've ever had gets it at least once a year here. 1-11/2nd of Dexamethasone in back leg muscle ,and you'll b hunting again in 3-4 days. Miracle snakebite drug!

I had a dog get bit 2x's in one week. Copperhead! Dog got sick for about 3-4 hours, limped around for a couple days then ok. I've had a few get rattlesnake bit and it's a little harder on them but in 3-4 days pull through just fine. No after affects!!!

This is all I have ever used for snakebite. A lot of people like Benadryl but my vet recommended this and it works a ton better. I give 3cc's under the skin and unless it is the dogs first snake bit they can usually hunt the next night if you wanted to. The first time they git bit will always be the worst for swelling and sickness but each time after that it gets a little easier on them.

Snake Bite

You guys do what makes you feel good and makes you think your doing right; BUT; in reality YOU don't have to do anything!!! If a dog dies, it will be in a few minutes; if they don't die, they will be going normal in a few days, with or without medicine.

To the first post; That guy was either ignorant to to facts, or setting up an excuse to use to cover a FAULT that may arise. There will NOT be after efects from a snake bite.

You are right about the dog dying or not. What you are missing is that without the shot the dog will swell up and be sick for days.

I like being able to walk out the next morning and see my dog up and about ready to eat, Not laying in his box sick, and barely able to get around due to a swelled up leg.

All this talk of snakes in the last few days sure makes me glad we don't have hardly any to deal with around here.

rattler

had my male bit in the foot swelled up aweful and rotted the hide off his foot where he got bit. gave him 3cc of penicillan everyday for a week. that was 3 weeks ago. he is great now but still missing some hide. i guess it depends on what kind of snake and i hear that dogs build an imune to snakes. i dont know.

i give my dogs dex and beynadrle. all of them are back to normal in a few days. but, i've got one dog that was bitten when she was young. now she's scard of of snakes. at night, unless she gets pulled into a hot scent, she walks thrugh the brush like a man walking through a mine field. if a stick moves she cowards. a lot of times i have to wait for her to catch up because she is so cautious walking through the bush. but she's been promoted to constant companion so it doesn't matter much.
