Whats the strangest breed of dog you have seen track and tree a coon?

I take my weirmerainer hunting with me sometimes, and I took them to a corn field and my two jips were split on two sides of the field and walking from one tree to the other. He struck a track drove it in there for about 10 minites and got locked down treed. They all had the meet 3 coons, 2 walkers, and 1 weirmerainer. LOL I also seen a pit tree one, and jack russell tree one. durndest thing you ever seen I laughed because the Jack Russell treed ahead of the guys dogs I was hunting with. LMAO

I've seen jacks tree a bunch of coons. Back when hides were worth good money we toted a jack or two with us to the woods incase we needed one yanked out of a hole. The strangest dog I have seen tree a coon is a Boston Terrier. He will also tree squirrels.

Clay.... that's so funny! My Boston Terrier hates a coon too! She goes absolutely ballistic. Will track and find a coon hide drag, too. She jacks the tree too much though! LOL She also trees birds and squirrels and can track and CATCH a rabbit. Even though their faces are smushed a Boston Terrier must have an exceptional sense of smell! I have been tempted to take her with us coonhunting but I worry she might get eaten by coyotes!

My other Boston hunts toads relentlessly but I discourage her from it because of Toad Poisoning. Too many times she comes in frothing at the mouth and drooling. I have to flush her mouth out.

A buddy of mine has a Scottish Terrier that hates coon. He don't hunt with her but she gets in on the puppy traning sessions. She really helps get the pups excited.

Seen alot of Jack Russels, Rats, and treeing Feists that do good in the woods before. I've even seen a beagle that done a good job.

My old Elkhound used to and my Yellow Lab does now.. We use her in early pup training mostly with drags and caged coon or coon hides... She's very good with younger pups.

I was releasing a coon out of a box trap at home and my boy was holding our Chiuaha "Taco Bell Dog". It jumped down mounted the the coon and road that thing for probably 20 yards til it went up the tree. He stayed there on the wood and Barked for 15 min. I wish I would of had that on tape!! I was LMAO!!!

My buddy had a spayed Rotweiler that went everywhere he did.
She never treed with another dog.
She never opened on track.
Had the meat every time.
Had as steady chop as you ever heard.
Even though she was supposd to stay at the truck she just couldn't help it sometimes.
The only dog we ever treed a bobcat with.

My dad had a border collie when he was younger and he said he was the best coon dog he's ever had. I've almost always had a rat terrier around to hunt with all my life. The last one I had was a great coon dog. He'd tree ahead of the hounds about half the time. We lost him one afternoon he climbed near the top of a 60' oak tree and chased a squirrel right off the end of a branch and landed in the driveway.

I was trout fishing once and was listening to a dog tree for
over an hour. I finally couldn't take it anymore and went to it.
I was suprized to find a Saint Bernard on the tree when I got
there!

My Newfoundland mixed mutt is a really fine kill dog. He don't have much of a voice, but he loves to hunt. He's caught coon on the ground. He weighs over 100 lbs. Amy

I have a yellow lab that has to be pute in the house
before i go hunting or he will show up wherever i am
hunting. I have seen him come along ways to get to where
i am at. He must have excellent hearing. but he can get
coons with the best of them, just mostly on the ground.

I have a nice little feist that I squirrel hunt. She hates anything with fur except other dogs and will tree a coon but I don't bring her at night b/c she'll tree a possum sometimes and I don't want her teaching my hounds any bad habits.

There were very few purebred coonhounds around here in the early 60's If you could even find one. Most locals believed "dog money stinks" and wouldn't sell or buy a dog, and for certain wouldn't pay a stud fee. They didn't have purebred dogs to breed one to anyway. But there were lots of deer dogs. The oldtimers that had coondogs wanted a little bull and a little airdale (to put the tree in them) and mostly hound (from deer dog stock I'm sure). Sometimes it would take two generations or more to get what they wanted. For example, cross a hound on a bulldog and also cross a hound on an airdale, then cross those pups.

The strangest "looking" dog I ever saw track and tree a coon was one of those crosses. He was a slick haired, decent eared, houndy looking dog that had somehow doubled-up on the airdale whiskers. He was scarey looking. If he had been bald he would have looked like a college professor.

Some 40 yrs ago a man who belonged to the same coon club as me hunted a collie which was a pretty good cooner...The collie was dead silent on track but a loud tree dog..He bought this dog from a fellow in Pa.

I knew a guy who bought an airdale only to be a coon dog. I thought he was nuts. Never saw that dog tree and never heard him bragging.

Coon dogs

I have owned several beagles that would run and tree coon. Right now I own a German shorthair that treed the first coon he ever saw. (5 months old) He is a pretty cool pup trainer now. He only hunts out about 100 yards and when you call him he comes back..... the pups follow him.
