In Eastern,KY every coon hunter whether or not their dog has ever treed one, they say that you can tree a coon easier in the summer than the fall and they also say about any half ''decent'' will dog tree one in the summer but in the fall you'll have to have a really good dog to tree one? Are they any advantages and disadvantages between the two?

I'm not sure if its better but I know its easier here in Indiana to start pups in the summer. For the simple fact you can cut or walk a young pup in a cornfield and usually hit a good hot track in 5 mins or less. Up here in the fall they have to get a little deeper to work up a track. So I myself would say its better to start a puppy and that's about it. I like to start pups completely alone so it helps me when I can walk around 1 field and make 3-7 trees.....

like Fall / Winter / early Spring... No bugs, woods are thinner of vegatation, no poison ivy and temps are more agreeable to hunting hounds and humans !! As far as training a young dog, corn fields do yeild hot races for training .....

I hear the same thing and what really pisses me off about the whole thing is a lot of hunters around here quit hunting about the first of December when the weather gets bad and then start again when the weather clears up in March or April right when the sows are breeding and having babies.

Around here, late July and early August often see Nite Hunt scores fall off. I believe it is due to coons moving a little just before dark, but mostly around dawn to avoid the heat. Our corn really doesn't come on till later in mid-to-late August.

Overall, I find late fall, winter, early spring much more comfortable and enjoyable for me. For training purposes early fall is best.

For the most part I would have to say fall hunting would be easier, in the summer the coons don't seem to move as good and its drier and harder tracking. Whereas tracking conditions get better come fall and coons start moving better. And of course theres no bugs in the fall like in the summer.

I like it all , both have thier pro's and con's ....... I think it evens out as far as seeing the coon ... he might be in more dens in winter , but in the summer you won't find em all in big timber either ....


I like fall hunting alot , the crisp air and change in the season is just a good time to be out .... hard winters may be the toughest time to get motivated to hunt and least fun.


Summer aint bad if you and your dog are in shape for it .... I hit the rivers and creeks that are shallow and it's fun ... sure don't go looking to wade the river in fall/winter.

The biggest difference for me is that in the winter there is more dark hours to hunt ... in the summer it's harder to get up at 10 pm when it's finally dark to start your hunt .... I hunt in the mornings more in the summer myself.

On what u call summer, I don't consider it fall until the corn is brown. Probably my favorite time is September-October for pup training. Winter and early spring for the more experienced hounds. I love the corn field races and most pups really start nicely up here when the corn starts to ripen. Wanted to be a little clearer than my first post.

If you care much for your dog you want hunt the summer time because of the rattle snakes and copper heads. Because by the time you can get up a mountain and back down to get it to the vet he or she is dead. Not to mention it be you. I hunt a few pups on some feeders I have cut brush and grass out to just keep them interested but no way am I turning a dog that me alot to me in the wild. To much risk this time of year and the snakes are very bad. But I think coons are the easiest to tree in late september through october. Kittens are seperating and seems like there is just a bunch of coons to be treed and thats any part of the U.S.

I live in eastern Ky and my dogs get hunted year round. Ive not had trouble with snakes or ticks yet but i know its a matter of time before it does happen. From march till now ive had treed about 20 coons that i have seen, i think summer and fall are a little different with fall being easier to run and tree.

Early spring the coon usually grab the first tree they come by. Tracking gets tougher in the tall grass during the summer, plus dogs often have a litter of kits to sort through. Doesn't really get better until early October when it cools down and weeds and grass die off. This is what it's like here anyhow.

Spring - good
Summer- sucks
Fall - great
Winter - depends on the year

People around here must like to hunt in the summer.Seems like in the winter when the leaves are off they are nobody at the hunts but when the leaves come back on,low and behold do they come out of the wood work.

Gators swim pretty much up until mid november here. i have several places where there are not as many gators, but i hate hunting those places out during the off season. most of the good public land borders the lake, rivers and swamps. just not worth loosing a dog to those places in the summer. i may hunt 1 or 2 night during the summer.

hey hole up in and lay deep. you will see some swimming but they are really slow moving in winter. sad thing is that they are thousands of gators round here and only 140 permits given out to take gator. don't make no sense. bout every pond holds a gator down here. took a 6' gator out of my pond last year. if there is water there is a gator.
