Heating pad info for whelping boxes

I would like to know what heating pads you all use in your whelping boxes. Are there any better than others. What brands and where to get them. And a good way to keep from ruining them in the whelping box. Any ideas are appreciated.

djsweetwater...

I would be really careful about using heating pads in the whelping box.

The reason is this. There is no way for the pups to get away from the heat if they get too hot.

Our vet recommended not to use them. A small watt light is better to use because they can get away from that because it wont be beaming directly down on them.

Also, if you have a Redbone, use a red or orange light. Dont use white, it will bleach their color.

This really did happen to a fried of ours! Her Redbone pups looked like Roan horses coats in 2 days!! It took 3 weeks for the color to come back!! They looked English then, because they had bleached hair, with red spots coming back!!

Black and Tan, use Black, blue or purple light.

Redticks, red or orange.

blueticks, blue or purple.

Walkers, regular light.

Janelle, I would be using a heat pad on a newborn pup I have right now if I could have found an acceptable one. I was looking for the kind that people used to use for baby pigs but couldn't find any. So, I've been using a heat lamp with a white light and been getting along just fine.

There might be some farm supply stores or mail order places that still carry the heavy duty, pig type heat pads, but I didn't find one in time.

Whether its a heat pad or lamp, you will want to arrange it so that there is heat in only part of the whelping box. They will find where its most comfortable for them. Another thing I've done is switch between a 250 watt and 125 watt light bulb, depending on the temperature.

Good luck and let me know if you find a heating pad, somewhere.

Thanks for the input. I am only putting the pad in one side of the box that way they can wiggle away from it. I'm just worried that the 20 something degree nites there will not be enough warmth on the floor from the lite. But I did not know about the heating pads for the pigs. I might check it out. Thanks.

Heating pad

I bought mine at Petsmart - it's made for a whelping box. Lies flat, made of some dort of hard rubber & is waterproof. It isn't warm to the touch but maintains correct teperature for newborns. There a 2 or 3 sizes - I have the large. I place it in the whelping box where the new pups collect to nurse. They can lie on it without getting too hot but move off of it to a saft place if they want to. The price was around $80

I dont use a heating pad.If I have a litter in cold weather I use a light bulb.Usally with a good tight box 60 watts is plenty..Box just needs to be high enough. And you need to run wires through dog box in to a light bow,so there is no exposed wires.
