I got a question folks, I got a young dog('bout a year and a half) that come from cold nose breeding, for bear and big game, that I am using for coon. She is coon crazy and will fight and kill a coon. The problem she has is she will go out and strike and stand on her head for long periods of time, usually when she gets to an obsticle like water. Last night we took her out with our pup trainer and the pup struck first, she tried to work out that trail for 20 minutes or so, then the old dog opened, and they trailed away from that spot, and I thought they were going to tree, but they stopped trailing and came back to the truck, the old dog was cold, and she jumped in the truck, the pup took off again and went right back to where she was standing on her head before, and opened and stood on her head again for 45 minutes. We finally went to her and she was stuck at some water. It was a pretty big area of standing shallow water and she was just working back and forth nose to the ground trying to pick up a trail. Is this curable? Does she just need more time? Or is it hopeless?

Id give her some more time,but be prepared for the chance she has more nose than brains.I dont mean to offend,but I have seen it before.A dog has a lot of nose but just dosent have the brains to learn how to use it.

Don't worry about offending me bearhunter, it ain't me you are talking about, and I have an open mind when it comes to dogs. More nose than brains, I have not heard that before, I will remember that. I will give her more time, is there anything I can do to help her brains?

sure can newhunter. teach her to handle. call her off when she hangs up. run down grab her and shake her.get her to move on. i can think of a BNT i got as an older dog like this. went from doing this all the time to hardly ever... made a nice dog... also the very best cold trailing big game hounds ive seen went thru this stage... what makes them good . patience, stubborness. also makes them a pain sometimes.. i know what bearhunrters talking about too, some dogs just dont get over it - boo hooing idiots. but if dog is from good dogs i bet it will get better. i know my best start dog ever went thru a long stage of backtracking.. im real glad i kept hunting him. not sure how much your dog has been hunted.. . everything comes with a price.. a good cold nose dog can look stupid sometimes.. other times is only way youl get anything.. i know ive bred long time to get more nose.. i like them cold nose. rather run than make excuses. if i only hunted coon in a 2 hour nite hunt mite want something different. if dog hasnt been hunted alot id put more time in. i know one thing is you can always find less nose if thats what you want. pete

Newhunter the dogs young it can be teached.It has the nose now teach it to use its brains.HOW to sit and stay.Any thing to make it use its brain.If it keeps standing on its head wipe it on make it move.When it move and picks up the track better it will no to drift out to find the track.Thats what i would do.

Thanks for the help. She is my 15 year old son's dog, so I let him know he needs to work on her handling and teach her to sit and stay. It also helps to know that going to her and moving her on is a good thing, we stood there last night listening to her discussing whether we should go to her or let her work it out. I votd to let her work it out, but she never did, so we went and caught her. next time, I'll know to go to her and move her along. She really hasn't been in the woods that much, and she has the drive and determination to be good, so hopefully she won't turn out to be one that bearhunter was talking about. I like a cold nosed dog too, I don't need less nose, I don't competition hunt that much, and when I do it's more for fun.

I think I would go make her go on.

I have a Blue dog that does the very same thing except alot of times she will back track or jack the track. Iwas told its either more nose than brains or more brains than nose. But I dont know

You need to correct a dog for standing on their head the same way some folks need to correct their dogs for running deer. I give a young dog 1 chance to work it out and then I will get after them and they soon learn that they need to drift on out and pick up the track on down the line or go and find another one quick or face some severe punishment. It takes longer for pups out of cold nosed stock for their brains to catch up with their nose. But, when their brains does catch up with their nose, you can end up with a superior coondog. Some quick correction is required. Sitting listening to them jack a track back and forth is ruining your dog and wasting your time. Start with a switch and if that doesn't get them to move on, use a e-collar on low strength working you way up. Don't worry about ruining them, you are ruining them if you don't do something.

Like pete says , teach her to handle , then when she gets hung up you can move her on alot easier.
You can usually tell the general direction the track is going before she hangs up so I would go to her and just kinda call her along the same direction as the track was headed. She should pick it up again and pretty soon she should get the idea how to drift it out. And once she does that it's like redtick said , you could have a superior hound.

Go to Wal Marts and buy several blankets to keep your self warm or go buy a hound that can move a track.

Newhunter The water not stoping her she can smell it better at the water then when she moves it out.She likes the stronger scent at the water.Thats why you make her move on.I live in N.W okla Bring your son up we have alot of coon get her on some good tracks no time to stand on her head.Your more then welcome.

I think that Monte is talking about where a coon has been feeding around a dirt stock tank or small hole of water.In this case she would be able to smell the coon all around the waters edge.Because thats where the scent is the strongest, but not the track leaveing that area.

tracking on water is harder because it's strong and it's all over. It spreads out over water. Hard on young dogs to learn what to do in that case. Many dogs have a hard time with this when they haven't been exposed to it very often.

Cheri here in okla its been one of the dryest years.It is harder on big water most of ours is dried up.Last night had a young dog opening around water holes didnt want to leave old dog opened on in timber pup moved on they treed the coon.This pup doesnt hang up bad but if she stays to long i will move her.

We are going again tonight, with another hunter that knows of some good spots, hopefully she will do better, but if she doesn't I know now to move her along the track. Thanks for all the help folks.
