There goes my bread and butter spot

Just happen to run into my brother-in-law yesterday and was talking and out of the blue he decides he is in the mood to start tanning hides. I thought he was talking about deer and some coyotes he has killed but after I kept on and on he finally said he was going to set a bunch of traps out. After beating around the bush for another 15 minutes I finally got out of him the "general area" they will be. When all else fails this is the area I can count on. I told him to tell me when he decides to put them out so I dont hunt there but being the A-hole he is 99% of the time I doubt he does. I dont have many places to hunt to begin with but now thats about 350 acres that will be out of the question. I have already quit hunting part of my hunting places because I got tired of climbing up and down bluffs and cliffs over the creek cause they always seem to tree ot the top of one and rock climbing is not in my job description. I probably wouldnt think as much of it but I asked him if he was using all the leghold type traps and such (about 40-50 traps altogether) from over at the barn and he said he wasnt using none of them but borrowing 10 instant kill traps and making about that many more snares to set out. I can already see the future in this little project of his...after about 2 weeks (tops) of running, unless he is catching the snot out of whatever, they will just be left out.

RedMan, Maybe you should help him set them out- then you would at least know where they are to remove them when he gets bored with the project.

sorry to hear this redman. houndsman need to support trappers. but 220 size body grip traps ought to be outlawed on land. snares are illegal here , 7 inch and up body grip must be 5 feet above ground after dec 16. i havent had a dog in a trap since fur prices dropped in 80 s ,they were everywhere here then,, only one dog was seriously hurt and that was an illegal trap with teeth on it, another was caught in a 220 but luckily i was right there when it happened. if traps were a big problem in my area i might try a little training with dogs. teach then to avoid them.. has anybody done this.. how bout training to avoid cars. ? ive never done either but seems possible to me. ive known guys have some success with training them to avoid cars. guy on beagle board was teachin beagles to avoid snakes. with e- collar - a king snake and a recording of a rattlesnake.. we all got a laugh but i give him credit for trying. pete
