We have tried many different ways. This is what works best for us.

We use shelled corn. Soak corn in water for 6 or 7 days. We mount a metal 5 gallon bucket on a tree. Put bucket just high enough off the ground, so you can dump soured corn in. We use a open top bucket. Coon have been eating a full 5 gallon bucket about every 6 days.

We can buy a 55 gallon barrel of corn for about $14. Cheaper than using dog feed. Also, coon will not destroy metal bucket and lot simpler to make.

I use an old tire with the bottom hung about chest hight on a bent over tree or limb. I use soured corn myself. I soak it about three days before putting in the tire. The good thing about the tire is that you can tell if you have a hot track if there is water on the side of the tire. Great for training pups and you can tell when coon are moving. This time of year the tire is usually wet at 5 or 6 in the morning. I guess the buckets or barrels would be the same. I stopped using dog food years ago because I wanted to know if I had a hot track or not. Corn is cheaper too.

Bought a $50 dollar motion detector camera from Walmart. Camera imprints the time on the pictures that are taken. My last roll of film had pictures of coons on the bucket from 9PM until 5AM the next morning. Had some pictures with 3 coons on them.

The drum cost me $5, the wood spool was free. Holds around 250 lbs of dog feed and will last about a month and a half in our woods.
