Buying a Dog? Any Advice?

I have been considering buying a dog from a guy in Iowa however the only problem is I am in NC. I will not be able to hunt this dog before I buy him as I would be picking him up in SC buying him based on what the guy has told me about him. I have done a little bit of research on this guy and he seems to be pretty staright up and I think he has been around for quite some time. I am still a little weary about spending that kinda money based on someone's word. I was hoping for some advice from some of you on this situation. Thanks Alot and good hunting

Ask

The guy for references on the dog and on himself...Also ask for an extended trail period on the dog.. There is a Bluegrass song " NEVER BUY A COONDOG SIGHT UNSEEN" If he is a good guy he won't mind the questions.....

I would advice against buying any dog that you have not hunted with. STRONGLY ADVICE AGAINST IT.

No way would I buy a dog without hunting it. Even if you have references on the dog and owner, only you know if the dog suits you.

What if the dog has a bad mouth? What if the dog runs armidillas? There are plenty of dogs in the eastern U.S. you could buy for more money and be better off.

allways remember this when buying a dog that SUPPOSEDLY allready runs and trees coons. For EVERY dog for sale, remember, there is a R-E-A-S-O-N that dog is for sale. Sometimes the seller may tell you the real reason why, many times they wont. Many times the dog may have 4 or 5 MAJOR PROBLEMS but the seller may tell you 1 or 2 of those problems and try to convince you there an Honest person when in fact they are not and they left out the other 3 reasons. Point here is, theres a thousand different ways it can go wrong. I know a guy that had a 8 year old Grandnite Champion walker male. The dog was one of the very, very, very, BEST COONDOGS I have even seen in my life in the woods. He sold him at 8 years old for
$600. The dog had Heartworms. He knew the dog did. A dog doesn't start coughing and wheezing until the later stages of it. Every seller is NOT a crook. But I think MOST ARE. Good luck.

A "sho-nuff" good coon dog will sell close to home, unless overpriced. No advertising is required to sell a GOOD dog. Obviously local hunters are not interested in this dog.

advise

Get in your truck and go see the dog..buy it if it suits your needs...I bought 1 dog sight unseen, but I trusted the owner like he was a relative.. I was not burned...You can do this on a guys reputation, but it is RARE..

I bought a female out of Missouri five years ago on the word of the man who sold her to me.

She came to me by air to Western New York. She was a mess with ticks and fleas. Took me two days to get her cleaned up. She was also afraid not shy afraid. It took me my wife and four kids two months to get her over this. When I took her to the woods for the first time by herself she stayed by my side. We walked within 200ft of a pack of deer and she never even blinked.
The following week I took her out with a friend of mines english dogs and to my surprise she ran and treed. Not only did she run and tree but she she did ahead of the other hounds twice.
She ended up turning into a really nice pleasure hound. Unfortunately just as she was starting to really hit her stride she was hit in the road.

Here is my point - I GOT LUCKY- I HAVE ALOT OF PATIENCE- MY WIFE WOULDN'T LET ME SELL HER IN THE BEGINNING SHE SAID SHE CAME TO US FOR A REASON AND SHE WAS RIGHT. That hound needed a good owner, trainer and a good home.

If you look closer to home you can find a good dog that you can try more than once. If you buy something cross country you better buy it from a well respected kennel that does not want it's reputation dirtied. I have also found that thier are more good hounds ruined by bad owners and poor trainers.

God bless the hounds they don't get to choose the owner

Good Luck
