Tuneing up???????????????

hey yall. I got a question. I have read ad after ad after ad and talked to LOTS of people about dogs and I have heard this said a WHOLE BUNCH. They say that the dog used to tree coon after coon after coon and was a really good dog but they have just been setting in the pen for a month, or two months or a year and just need "TUNEING UP" to be a great dog again. Then there just asking like $600 or $800 for the dog. I am skeptical when I read this. What do you guys think???? Do all these people mean that the dog just needs hunting one or two nights or 3 or 4 nights or a month of hunting or what???? During which time are you allowed to try the dog out for that long or do they want you to just buy the dog and take there word on it or what????? So far I havent even called to check on any dogs that supposedly need "tuneing up" to tree a coon. Just sounds kinda fishy to me. what do you guys think??

about 25 yrs ago my father bought a half red&half mt. cur, the
guy said it hadn't hunted in over a year. He said she just needed tuning up. She ended up being silent but in 2 yrs that he had her
she probably treed 350 coons . She trained our young Red female
they worked great together, the red was real open on tracks,
so you knew you had the coon when the cur opened. She
climbed a tree one nite fell out from way up we raced her to the
vet. He couldn't save her she had burst her intestines.

Any animal that works for a living needs to be in shape. To me, "tuning up" means getting them in shape and if comp hunted, working on their flaws. But yeah, I'd be leary of a dog advertised as just needing "tuned up". I put that in the same class with young dogs that just need "a few more coon". If the price is right, the dog may be well worth it. Or, maybe not. You hunt the dog a night or two and then you know what you're dealing with. 'Course, that comes from a guy that never buys broke dogs.

JUST NEED'S TUNING UP COULD BE THE CASE. BUT IVE NOTICED IT USUALLY MEEN'S U AIN'T GOING TO LIKE WHAT YOU SEE. ME AND ONE OF MY BUDDIE'S HUNT SOME IN THE OFF SEASON TO HAVE SOMETHING TO DO MAINLY. BUT MY OTHER BUDDY STARTS WHEN SEASON COMES IN AND QUIT'S WHEN SEASON GOES OUT. AND I PROMISE U HIS DOG DONT NEVER NEED TUNING. HE IS JUST AS GOOD THE FIRST TIME U TURN HIM OUT AS HE WAS THE LAST TIME U TURNED HIM OUT, 9 MOUNTHS EARLIER.

I would suggest hunting the dog needing "Tuned Up" Three, Four nights in a row Before spending a dime. If the dog is alittle sharper, faster and more confident each night than the one before, then Ya, just needs some tuning up. I also have seen dogs that all there lives, Still need. "Alittle Tuning Up".

I would hunt these dogs with Both eyes open> jmo.

I have one that turned 2 this month. He was treeing his own this spring. Layed him up from April until the middle of september. Never forgot a thing. A buddy of mine had one the same way except he needed almost restarted the next fall. the dog turned out real good. At 4 he got into farm chemicals and went blind. You just never know.

I remember when my female had pups. I put her up when she got about half way thru her pregnancy and she didnt hunt again until the pups were about 7 weeks old. First time I unsnapped her she went hunting but didnt do much. Second night I took her she treed a coon.

i dont know much but a dog one says needs tuneing up wasnt much before that is the reason they wasnt hunted. that one needs tuneing up is usually a sales pitch for one that is not worth a dime. several folks up yonder hit on it a good dog will be just as good no matter how long you lay them up just may have to knock some fat off them and get them in huntin shape they may be a little short winded.

I have to disagree with some of what you had to say. I have all females(mostly) and it seems to me that after coming in season or having pups that the first two or three drops they are looking for anything to get after coon, deer, fox just whatever they hit first. Maybe its just my high strung idiots but that is my experience.

Wilddog is right and when my female comes out of heat. She dont run the first thing she comes across.None of my buddies females do either.I mean 3 weeks should not make one foget all its training. If it does.It want eat here long.If I'm gonna sell a dog it will be tuned up when somebody comes to look at it.Sheep dont buy one of these needs tuned up dogs unless you get to try the dog for a few weeks!!!!

I am gonna agree with some, and disagree with others.

I agree that a finished out hound, say 4 years or older, will more than likely be out of shape, but should not need any tuning up.

But a younger hound could be a whole different story. If you got a two year old hound that was pretty freshly broke off deer right before he was layed up for 6 months then I would say there is gonna be a good chance that said hound is gonna need a refresher course to set it back on the strait and narrow.

As far as females acting a little goofy before and after a heat cycle,or a litter of pups,I would have to agree with this happening from time to time.
I have seen some pretty nice females look pretty stupid because of one of these two reasons.
It aint because of being layed up though, its because of raging hormones.

I reckon about all females get a little unpredictable at certain times.

As a general rule of thumb though,I am gonna have to agree that most of them dogs that just need "tuned back up" probably aint worth wasting time on.

Depends on if it was ever really running and treeing all that good to start with.
If it was really doing what it was said to be doing then I would say the dog ought to be showing you what its potential is after 5 strait nights of hunting. If it is still acting like an idiot after 5 nights I would say it never knew much in the first place.

The older they are the less it hurts them to be laid up. A dog laid up at a year and a half probably wasnt a finished dog, I would be a little hesitant to give alot for it. Heck I aint gona give much for any of them I'll train my own.

To me , tuning up means getting a dog in shape. But they are two types of dogs. The first dog may be a type of hound thats has to be hunted 3 to 4 nights a week to be sharp. The next type of dog can be laid up 6 to 8 months without being hunted, but still can remain sharp.

JTD brings up a very good point.
Some dogs will look like they never missed a night after a 6 month lay off, while other, usually more high strung dogs, will look like total idiots after being layed up a week. Some dogs need to be kept hunted down to look their best.Lay 'em up a week and let 'em get that edge on 'em and wheeeewwwwweeeeeee, they are gonna cover some country and run everything that lays a track.
