Hounds size

I remember when I was younger it was so easy to fine a hound that would only mature to around 50lbs. Now days it seems hounds are getting around 70lbs and they wont put there mouth on a coon. Is there a breeder left that is producing the grittier 30-50 pound dogs.

My female is about 50 lbs but she's not a kill dog but she won't let one get away either. She'll help other dogs close one out though. I like the smaller dogs because they seem to hold up better and maybe even live alittle longer. I don't need the dog to kill the coon just get him up a tree and me and my .22 will take care of the rest.

Size...............

....has nothing to do with grittiness, that's in the breeding. But I know of several friends that prefer a smaller dog.

Any pup will chew on a dead one Christy! LOL!

Small dogs can tree just as many coon and eat less, these 75 and 80 pound dogs better tree me a heap of coon for the feed bill they cost.

From what I have heard my Crockett dog is big for the Cord hounds being produced. He's 60#s. My dad hunted him with three Cord hounds in AK and he was bigger than all of them.

The 70 pound dogs don't eat that much more! You get a good one you won't care how much it weighs!

Wayne you may need some reading glasses, I've read some of your posts, did ya'll pass English class in school???!! LOL! Just kiddin! Did you get your pup Wayne?

I have a 35 pound english female Nite Ch Gr Ch 'PR' Rob's Prime Time Red Ruby she is two years old. I will put her in all and any company and she will have enough grit to tree the coon and stay treed in any company. As far as killing the coon I have never seen a coon back her yet. Just the other night I had her in the box we shook a 25 pound coon out to five dogs and it wipped them all, they stood there and bayed on it. We didn't have a gun with us so I walked back to the truck and turned her loose. All the baying was over then because after she had it wipped the other five finally decided they would help. So it is not the size of the dog in the fight, it is the size of the fight in the dog. I failed to mention why I had to put her in the box it is because she was with pups and I was afraid of getting her hurt, but when all else failed I had to get her out. I also need to mention that she was the one who treed it.

I got a female about 40 lbs. out of Rambo II. She fights just hard as she trees. The other night one came out alive. She was by herself and quick. She was biting him on the mouth just trying to piss him off I think. She's never been bit by one. might make a difference.

The size

The size of the hound I think is what kind of feed you feed it. My male bluetick is about 75 pounds and most of his litter mates are smaller.

Then they got a bullet in them. You REALLY find out how tough a dog is when you just let a big healthy coon out of a cage on a dog. I have yet to see one single dog kill one like that by themselves. I saw 3 kill one like that. But not one by themselves.

****sheep, I was doin a lil training witha young dog, I had a big sow coon in a trap...atleast 22# or so. well my wife was holding this top bred bluetick and he was showing a lil' interest so I cut the coon out the trap and bam my blueheeler runs him down in know time and kills the coon before I could pull him off of it. this is a 70 # heeler though and he turned out better then the top bred bluetick. lol
