What do U use for Fleas?

We're having a terrible year for fleas around here. We've tried everything we can think of to no avail. Sooo- thought I'd ask you all what you use and how is it priced? Is there anything out on the market that can be bought in bulk that is reasonable AND effective!?!?!?!

I use Frontline Plus on mine once a month, but if you have a major flea problem you can use it as often as every 2 weeks. Also, Program and Capstar can be used in combo with the Frontline and it works great. I would use Capstar to kill all the fleas on them then apply Frontline. I would also treat the kennels and yard. Hope this helps with your problem.

I have my pens built off the ground and keep the grass cut. I also use the plastic barrels for dog houses. A couple years ago when I had my hounds on the ground I had a bad problem. None this year or last.

Leonard,
I believe the Dursban has been taken off the market. Everytime something works good they do that. Been off now for a couple years. The diazinon worked well too. But, they took it off before dursban.

We now use Advantage or Frontline. Works better than spraying or spreading granuals. Lot less work and more effective. Not a flea on the yard.

Also, if you have house cats, they carry fleas onto your yard. And you can get fleas from hunting w/ you buddies dogs or going to a show. No more cats here.

I now SWEAR by the Advantix PLUS. We have had a horrid battle with fleas and tried bout every spray, dip, and spot on there is, including bio-spot, frontline, roundup dip, happy jack dip, hartz spot on, zodiac spot on, the list goes on. My vet's assistant wanted me to try the advantix but i hated to pay so much for a six vial box so she even offered to 'break' the box and sold me one vial. i split it between my two dogs that have flea-allergy-dermatitis, these two poor gals will just scratch theirselves bald if they get even a couple of bites. Within minutes they were flea free and stayed thus for the entire month. it's a little pricey for a lot of dogs but not compared to all the money i spent on stuff that didn't work. I buy the 'blue' tube that treats the x-large dogs and split it between two average sized hounds. It costs bout ten dollars a vial so it runs about 5 dollars per dog per month. I've even used it on two week old babies, i just put a spot bout the size of a match head on their neck and they stayed flea free as well. i SWEAR by it.

Sulpher---put all over yard, in barrels, every where. Does not hurt dogs at all.You won't have trouble with fleas or ticks.

Frontline

I use Frontline spray on the dogs and a 10% pyrethrin livestock spray concentrate for spraying around the pens and on the ground.

Started using the frontline spray about four years ago and it cured the problem of fleas and ticks on my hounds. Frontline can be a little pricey but I have found that it doesn't take as much as the directions say to use to be effective . If you go by the directions you will use up a bottle of the spray on two dogs. NOT NECESSARY !! About six to eight sprays on a dog in the right places about every four to six weeks during the summer months and keeping the grounds around my runs sprayed with pyrethrin spray has pretty much eliminated the flea problems I used to have and I pull very few ticks off the dogs when hunted during tick season.

Stacey, the reason they banned dursban was because of the concerns for human health effects ---- especially kids.

Dursban was found in about every popular insecticide on the market..............I did pest control for years and it really didn't matter to me as I would switch insecticides every 2 years or so to prevent a resistance being built to 1 certain insecticide.

But on the flip side, liquid chemical treatment for termites has been affected as Dursban was a better chemical insecticide compared to the watered down stuff that is used today. Thats why non liquid chemical termite treament like Sentricon is better today.

FrontLine & Advantix

For those of you using these products check out www.countrysidepet.com This is where I buy my Frontline Plus to sell in my store. The prices are reasonable and if you buy just 4 of the Frontline 3-pks you get a discounted price.

We use a spot on for each dog once a month (but do it every 3 wks instead of 4 because the stuff we use also repels ticks up to 3 weeks).
Outside the kennel we lime - Inside the kennel I spray each dog's area and dog house they sleep in with a product called Flicks. (It's an all natural flea repellent you can get at the local feed/supply store. It comes concentrated so you have to dilute it with water before using. I swear by the stuff for inside the kennels).

We also had a horrible time this year after we moved. Fleas, ticks, and mosquitos. Tried Advantix and the stuff didn't make a bit of difference, for $60 I expected more! Advantage doesn't do ticks, so we use Frontline and love it. Frontline plus once a month on the dog and also a ground treatment made by Ortho. It is in a big bag, you buy it at walmart for like $12-15 and it kills fleas, ticks, mosquitos, biting nats, lice, spiders, you name it. Granules are non-toxic to pets, water resistant for 4 weeks and one bag treats I think 20,000 sq. ft, or 50,000 sq. ft. if you get the more expensive bag. This month we tried just the granules with no Frontline, haven't seen a flea yet and only two ticks.

anscox not trying to hijack your post, but granules can be toxic to pets. They can be deadly.

Certain granule insecticides are safe for pets.

Ortho makes granule insecticides that are not safe for pets.

Always read the labels.

Read the label, its safe. Asked the vet too. It is new on the market for this summer, marketed for people with children and pets.
Active ingredients are actually safer than cattle, horse, or seven dust products. Mainly the same stuff found in flea shampoos only extended release.
