My Boy

bless his little heart is 10 years old , a friend of ours gave him a squirrel dog pup back in feb. ,she was treeing squirrels every day in the yard , slept with him in the bed , and was smarter than i am , well she got run over yesterday in our lane by the woman that lives down below us , we live a half mile off the hard surface road on a gravel lane , there is no excuse for a dog getting killed on that lane !!
anyway he comes here in the forum and reads , he hasnt been feeling up to it since his little cricket went to heaven...
i guess what i wanna know is what do you say to your 10 year old when he is digging the whole to burry his whole world in ?? i handled it the best way i could between the tears. dont know why i threw this in here , but it did make me feel a little better.

Sorry to hear of his loss.

I tell you what, It takes alot out of ya, no matter how big of a boy you are. I hated to bury the last Hound I had. He was 6 years old and died a day before his 7th. I have to say I shed some tears also.

I remember that Moment,

When I was a Boy, My parents suprised me with a Beautifull Irish Setter Puppy, I named Him Tory, That Pup, Grew into a Beautifull, Dog, that I loved so much, Just as your Son, loved his Squirrel dog.

Well one nite, Tory was Run over, My parents told me, it devistated me, but what they did for me, was to have my best friend come over and stay with me for a Couple of days.

Its easier to Cope with the pain, when you have a Friend.
Im sure Sorry to hear about his loss, I know how bad that hurts.

PS,
My Mother, wrote a Book, that was Published,
The Story about Tory is in it.
The Book is Titled, A Mother Shares, By Susan Nethery.

Poor kid...

Dogs have such short lives to begin with.. What is the lady who ran over the dog like? Maybe she could sit with your boy and let him understand how sorry she is and let him tell her some stories about his squirrel dog? Maybe she could even help with getting him a new dog?
Sounds like you will need a pen or a fence to keep the new dog out of harm's way. Maybe you could make a project with him out of building something like that and giving him something to look forward to--the day he gets a new dog. While nothing will replace his squirrel dog in his heart, in my experience, a new pup is the best medicine for getting past grieving over the old one.
Your family's in our hearts and prayers.

I am sure sorry to hear about your Son's dog. I hope he is able to make friends with a new one pretty soon. Let him know that it is ok if he doesn't like it as much as his first one because it's pretty hard to replace that first good dog. Let him know every dog he has will be a little different from the last one but thats the fun in getting to know different dogs.

My Boy

Vatreedog, reading your story about my boy brings back memories, I have a litter off a rat attack, and a litter mate to skipper, and tipper female that Jess Dickerson had, and the sire is a Stylish Clover, and Deanwood Drifter male that did pretty good in the Orangeburg hunt, we think he is a coon dog.

My Boy is welcome to have one If you say so, litter of 13 raised 10, they will be 10 weeks old Sunday August 14, had two five way shots and been wormed from age two weeks, as nemex 2 calls for and If you would like to see a picture of the litter now I can send one.
Free Pup for my boy

Been there

Been there myself. Not a fun situation to deal with. Not a whole lot you can say. Like I explained to my son when he got the pup, everytime you turn a dog loose, you might never get to see him again. I would bring that back up at times to him just in case his dog did get killed. And, it did happen. It was one of the hardest days I ever needed to deal with. It was the longest ride home ever, your son is along and you had to bury his dog 3 hours away from home. That is one hound lesson you never want anybody to go thru.
