Young dog question.

I have a 2.5 yr old walker. He hates a coon in a cage for sure. I had him on one today and he went crazy but when he finds the coon he doesn't like to tree. He hasn't treed alone before always with other dogs. Help out anyone?

Got the same problem with an English female here. She's comming up on 2 and hates a caged coon but won't say a word on the tree. You find out let me know... If you just bought him, sounds like someone sold you their problem. Probably make someone a nice pet.. JMO..

Are you shooting coons to the dogs?

He's gotten used to seeing them and me to'ing with other dogs. Give him some alone time in the woods to figure it out. Your going to get frustrated at first but hopefully he'll get it figured. Don't show him any more coons or letting him have some fur if he doesn't tree it. If you turn one loose don't let him see it at all at 2yrs his nose should be working just fine he's just gotten lazy and wants to see everything. If by 3 he's still not clicking find another dog and stop showing them coons.

The barking and slobber mouths look cool and all but its not really training him for what he's supposed to do which is to use his nose and find game. not fight caged coons or even fight coons period.
good luck

no i havent shot a coon down to him yet. he will bark when he knows where the coon is but he wont stay put like he will walk off and circle then come back and bark. he wont stay on the tree or even get on the tree without me smacking it then i have to rub him and talk to him to keep him up there.

tie him back, catch him off the tree and make a fuss over the other dogs, then when you leave grab his leash and walk him out and load him up, never giving him any attention, do this for a while, he will snap.
