GPS TRACKING SYSTEMS IN UKC HUNTS
In light of recent calls, there seems to still be some confusion amongst hunters whether or not GPS tracking systems may be carried by the han_dler during the course of a UKC nite hunt. It has always been acceptable for the handler to carry any traditional tracking systems on them during hunting time. They just could not be turned on or used while time is in. For the record; GPS tracking systems are no different. They may be car_ried by the handler, but like any other tracking device, may not be turned on or used during hunting time while doing so.
Provisions were made for GPS Tracking Systems where a handler could leave it turned in the on position; however, if a handler opts to leave his GPS unit turned in the on position during hunting time, then the unit must be left in the vehicle and may not be used or viewed by anyone. That is, until time out has been called.
That provision is noted in Rule 20, which may possibly have lead to the misconception that they may not be carried during hunting time. This is not to be confused with electronic training devices. Those units may not be turned on or carried by the handler at any time during the course of a hunt unless the dog is scratched from the hunt and all other dogs have been handled. The consequences for disregarding the mis-use of any electronic device, whether it be tracking or controlling devices are, extremely significant in that they will land a handler on the barred list in a New York minute.
