New dog question. HELP PLEASE!

I went in the woods tonight with a caged coon and i let him go at the foot of the woods. I should have been in the field but.... I just got this dog 1 week ago. He wasnt hunted much and never hunted alone. So i turned him loose and he went on the track not fast judt walking. He bawled on the track about 10 times then he sped up and bawled some more. He was still barking when i reached the top of the hill. But i guess he seen my light and heard me and a buddy talking and came back to me. Then i lead him up and he was winding and barking. But i didnt cut him loose again. What should i do? Any suggestions?

cant hunt on the end of a leash, let em run thats how they learn. when he was winding it on the leash is when you need to talk to him and get him fired up then cut him loose.
