pup learning to use his nose? or bad habits starting

I have a 7 month old pup, while on are walk yesterday a rabbit jumped out in front of us he took off after I called and told him no he payed no.mind to me. I did not have his e collar on. When I got to him I put him back on lead. Then he winded a ground hog and lead me to its hole. I lead him away again with a no. My question , is this all bad and should not be alowed or do u let him work his nose a lil. Has not seen a coon yet but works a drag well

Some of the best track dogs I ever saw ran loose with beagles until they were 8-10 months old. I don't think it hurts anything for them to learn what their nose is for. A pup that can burn a rabbit shouldn't have any trouble trailing a coon. I'd say your pup is developing it's game drive, learning to use it's nose, and both are normal and good...

Just keep tellin him no every time he runs some track and before you know it you will have a very nice worthless companion, and at 7 Mos. every time you have the urge to shock him just hold that reciever to your tongue and push the button. HES A PUPPY at that age anything he runs is good practice and when he starts treeing coon he will forget the rest.

One event does not make a habit.

He is going to run into a rabbit sooner or later.

I would be more concerned if he didnt chase it.

Shocking a 7 month old pup that has not yet even seen a coon for bumping a rabbit is a really bad idea IMO.

my pup im workin on now started runnin what ever tikled her nose at about 4 5 months and i allowed her to do so with no complaits then she started treein opossume still good for a puppy then she treed a coon and i gave it to her she got bit now at 7 months she is gone lookin for a coon they no what is the most fun for them and wat makes u happy.. time and patients is the biggest KEY the very last thing u want to do is shock a pup off track or any game for that reason... my opinoion in starting young pups if they can run it let them and if they tree it give it to them opossum, ground hog, squrial, etc if it climbs and they tree it roll it..u can always get them off of it later but usually a few coon is all it takes and they will be off the other stuff on there own JMO

I finally agree with everybody.Let him run and get his legs under him and learn what his nose is for.You can trash break later if you need to.

Good deal thanks. I thought It might be fine. Then on the other hand I did not want to promote running trash. So i asked, and I have not been shocking him. But I read a lot that u need Ro light them up if they run trash. But I guess that's when u are chasing coons. Not taking a walk/play time

if u have a shocker leave it at home untill he is treein u a coon everynight then if u think he needs a zap give it a shot but start out on the lowest setting no need to fry em just enough to get there atention..and only work on one habit at a time then when its fixed move to the next one..e-collars have ruened just as many pups as they have trained
