I do not chip my pups. I tattoo w a national reg.

Here's why
1) when pups are chipped chances are great they migrate. Most of my chipped dogs have their chips by tail or feet and when vets (even same vets who chipped the pup) check the dog it is a 10 min ordeal where I habe to take the scanner because vets give up before chip is found (have tobread chip or see tattoo for health certs).

2) not all pounds check for chips (lots of people have picked up their dogs after chipped dogs were confirmed NOT there, either chip wasn't checked or chip migrated and whole dog.was not checked for chip).

3) in the last 25 years we have had chips the laws have not changed. Research facilities still do NOT have to check for chips. By law they cannot even buy a tattooed dog even from the owner. If it is tattooed it cannot go to a research facility and they have to check.

4) tattoos are cheaper

5) avid supports HSUS (or did a couple years ago). We switched to home again.

6) for schutzhund/ring sports tatts are easy to show for verication before comp (req verification of perm id before each comp) and chips for such ID req owner buy a scanner.

7) if pups slip ID bands you can ID through tattoo. Nothing worse than getting a chipped pup from breeder and later realizing chip on paperwork is not chip in dog because breeder didn't buy a scanner to resolve mix ups (they can happen).

I let owners chip their own when. I do chip mine when older. I tattoo as babies on the belly.

I tried the tattoo thing once, on inner thigh. she licked it out and was done again...same thing. at 10yo, cannot find the tat. I chip all of mine. any migration has been to the right or left of center by a few inches.

That's a first for me, lol. In 30 years I have never had a dog/pup's tattoo licked off. Wouldn't think it's possible on a tatt done right. That's some severe licking to lick of that layer of skin down to remove a tattoo.

better half chips using avid, will have to check on the husa though may have to change brands if they are husa connnected. Never had a migration problem, chipping cant hurt in recovering or proving ownership. Once recovered a dog 187 miles away because of a vet scanning. Also if it takes a vet 10 minutes to find a chip something just ain't right. So chip, tattoo, freeze brand jmho

Do my own chips at 5 weeks. Used to use Avid, now use Home Again. I register everything to me as secondary contact, owner as primary, that way I KNOW they're registered. NEVER had one migrate. Easy to do, most pups don't even squeak. I scan when pups leave so owner can see they have the right set of paperwork (microchip, AKC, UKC, etc.) and so they're aware that the pups are identified correctly. I also chip every rescue that comes through. So many dogs in rescue could have been back home that day if they'd been chipped/registered.

No collars at home, but they always wear collars with id tags any time they leave the house.

It's included in my pup price. The chips run me about $20-22 a piece and that includes lifetime registration. I never want one of my puppies lost. I know it's not infalliable, but . . .

I chip everything...due to cost I wait until they are sold and on their way to their new home..it takes 2 mins..no pain..very lil blood...I've never had them move if they are placed correctly...I would recommend AVID....there is nothing stopping you from chopping and tattooing..however tattoos were a pain in the but to do.

Avid has a high % rate of migrating. ALL dogs are chipped above shoulder. But often they end up elsewhere. My dogs get scanned at 2 and eyery year after that (all of them) for their ofa and cerf certs.

Takes me under 2 mins to find a chip, I always chech whole dog. The vets offices tend to just scan shoulders down to knees and halfway down spine before giving up and asking you to chip them. That is if they migrate. I have older dogs that didn't migrate, but every one of my 2-5 year olds have migrated.

Years ago I use to Tattoo mine own in the ear I always used the last 4 digits of the reg #. I never had them to come off either. My guess is either the mentioned above didnn't pentrate the skin enough or used a cheap ink. Tattooing didn't make the squall at you.. Thanks for all of the coments. All are appreaciated. Thanks again, JR

I found on a website (I think I found thru Amazon.com) HomeAgain Microchips for $10.99 each..

I chip my dogs.. But I also freeze brand them.. I've tattooed ears before, but my old male, you can't even read it anymore.

Check to be sure that includes the registrations as well. The chips are useless unless they're registered to someone.
