any coonhunters that are grave diggers???

im just curious to see what other coonhunters are also grave diggers like myself. i am the grounds foreman at lakeview cemetery in jamestown ny. we are the largest cemetery in our county at almost 170 acres and over 45,000 burials. we have many notable people buried there including several u.s. senators, a few olympians, b.f. goodrich (tires),the gooddell family (nfl commisioner roger gooddell) and lucielle ball. we get thousands of people every year coming to see luceys grave. its a dirty job but i like it and just wanted to see who else is in the same line of work as me. dig graves by day and coonhunt by night.

about 7 years ago i had an opportunity to do it. My sister n laws boyfried at the time had his own grave digging company. I found out about the hours and pay and I declined. He said "we may drive 4 hours round trip but you only get payed for the time we are there digging and you make $5 an hour. So I figured it up an average week for me would have been about 72 hours a week total time away from home at $5 an hour. yall can have that stuff !!! LOL

in my line of work you have to have a real good sense of humor and be a little nuts when you enjoy a job like mine!

when I was in high school I would help my grandfather dig graves but we hand dug them and we could have one dug in about 2 hours and cover it in 30 min and we got 300 a grave thats good money when you have 2 or 3 a day to dig

I have dug graves. I started out helping my grandfather hand dig graves at a country cementary. I worked at 2 different cemetaries where we used a back hoe and I hand trimmed the graves. I helped put quite a few to rest. The only real bad thing was when a grave was close to another grave and the vault wasn't sealed, held water which leaked into the new grave. Most graves are only 4 and 1/2 deep, not 6 foot like lots of people think.

The 2 cemetary jobs were hourly wages, so I didn't make much. But, my grandfather was very well paid for the graves he dug and often got tips on top of the fee. The sextons at the cemetaries I worked at got the tips which sometimes could be very generous. Neither sexton shared the tips.

Grave digging is well paid here in Illinois. It was several hundred dollars an opening back 40 years ago when my grandfather dug.

the only aspect of my job i dont really care for is when i have to bury babies or children.thats no fun but the rest of it doesnt bother me.trust me i always get some pretty weird looks when i tell people where i work! we have dug up alot of strange things over the years. the madness at my job really gets crazy around memorial day.a huge parade ends there at our soliders circle where several thousand soliders are buried from w.w.1 through current times. we get a big turn out for that but it really gets packed in there because the city has a very large gala days celebrating lucielle ball. all the lucy nuts are out for that! lots of desi and lucy costumes. if i had hair, id pull it out every year at that time!!!!

i buried a man a few years ago whose wife came up to me and told me to dig his hole extra, extra deep , so deep she couldnt see the bottom of it and she said she was burying him with his cell phone so she could still call him and scream at him! the funny part was that this man was a preacher! that was odd.
