What Do You Think

How old would you let a pup be before you start hauling it to the woods

When it can keep up with me. I won't let one go with the dogs till it can keep up with them safely. As long as it stays with me and doesn't try to go with the hounds I will let it go if I feal like messing with it. I can teach one how to get threw fences and swim a creek while I am hunting. It kills 2 birds with one stone..

i got one thats 5 months old now. i take him along and just let him run around . he will go with the older dogs till they loose him then he turns around and comes back. this gets him so hes not scared of the dark and being on his own. i think its good to let him run. my 9 year old son is the one who he belongs to and he will lead him in and out of the woods. its a learning exsperants for both of them. im not worryed about realy getting the pup to hunt yet, he will let me know when hes ready then ill push him alittle at a time.

My rule is a pup has to load hisownself up in the box before he is big enough to go hunting. But sometimes I cheat on myself. LOL.

I think the earlier the better, meaning not training him to track a hide or anything but getting the pup use to crossing creeks jumping over things, letting him be a puppy in the woods. That way when you do take the pup in the woods he'll be use to everything during the day or at night. I know how i'd feel if I just got thrown in the woods at night for the first time. I may put to much thought into it but I put myself in the puppy's shoes.

My Redbone pup just turned 5 months. he has been riding in the box for 2 months or so and usualy just runs around the trucks. 2 weeks ago i loosed my 2 year old blue tick while my puppy was playin around the truck. blue dog went about 50 yards and struck, when he struck that puppy froze, threw his head in the air and went straight to him. Ran with him 900 yards to a tree. When i go to the tree blue was treeing his tail off and my pup was runnin around jumpin on the tree. He hasnt barked yet but he has definatly started to figure out whats goin on and what he is sapposed to do. Now every time I go i put him out on atleast one drop with the other dogs. he goes with em every time.

Age really has little to nothing to do with when you let a pup do anything. They mature at a differant rate. The maturity is what you have to worry about. I have a BIG pup out in the yard that is a year old but not very mature. So I let him go with me all the time but haven't really tried to get him to start yet. He would with a releast coon or two but I will wate a bit.
