I been wondering about that too. He usually makes good sense in the stuff he writes. He may be a complete dingbat in person (doubt it) but I always liked reading his articles.

I talked to John on the phone a couple of months ago and he said that the Cooner did not want him to write for them anylonger. Not trying to stir the pot, directly from the source.

Great idea American Cooner! Take out the only article in your entire magazine that is worth reading. I'm sitting in my house snowed in with a brand new Cooner here, and I can't even find anything in the magazine that I want to read. Seems like everyone is doing interviews with hunt winners now. Interviews are rarely interesting to read in my opinion. It seems like everyone is the same. What ever happened to stories (fiction)? I thought everyone new that hunters enjoy stories. If you don't know it all you have to do is hang out with a few hunters for a while before you figure out that we spend most of our time telling stories that in most cases are at least 50% fiction (not interviewing each other).

I agree the interviews are all the same. Just change the names and you have a new one every month.

I wish they would get some other people to advertise stud dogs in there. I get tired of looking at the same old ones. Does every one in the world have a stud dog out of Sackett Jr.?

i agree with you ryan. i liked wicks article's. i thought he blowed and crowed on his self a little much but after you sifted through all that he made some good since. my dad has some old full cry's from back in the seventies. i have read everyone of them. full of diffrent stories. o.l. beckham was one i liked best. about all i do with the cb's is look to see where the hunts and shows are going to be and who won what. flip through the stud dog ads and i'm done.

I really enjoyed Wicks articles. It was usually the first thing I read after I received my Cooner. It was also the first thing I noticed wasn't there the last time couple times my Cooner came.
Matter of fact,I got my Cooner two days ago and have yet to read a single article in it yet.

I AGREE WITH YOU FOLKS, THE JOHN WICK ARTICLE WAS THE BEST PART OF THE MAGAZINE. I LIKE TO LOOK AT ALL THE STUD DOGS AND SEE HOW MUCH SMOKE THEY LIKE TO BLOW. THIS DOG HAS TWO LITTERS OF PUPS ON THE GROUND AND HE IS THE NEXT BEST HOUND, OR THIS STUD GETS 14 PUPS PER BREEDING. IT WOULD BE REAL EASY FOR SOMEONE WHO DOESN'T KNOW THE SCORE TO GET SUCKED IN REALLY QUICK. THERE ARE ALSO SOME VERY FINE HOUNDS IN THE COONER, JUST DIDN'T WANT TO COME ACROSS AS I WAS BASHING THE COONER MAGAZINE.

I didn't renew my subscription when I found out he quit writing articles for them. They were always full of knowledge or could help you in some way with your hounds.

I am a junkie for anything hound related and so I usually keep a subscription to Full Cry, Cooner, and CB. I find that I get kinda glazed over with Cooner every couple of years and let my subscription lapse for a while. The sameness of it all is a bit much. Full Cry has all those different writers on soooo many different kinds of dogs that you kinda have to wade through to get to the hound stuff, but I like the big game stuff and fiction stories in there. Coonhound Bloodlines continues to be tops for me. Lot's of info, enough glossy photos of slobberin treeing studs for eye candy, and the monthly change of theme (breed issues, breeder's issue, etc) provides the variety that keeps it from getting stale. Just my opinions. So I always get CB and FC and occaisonally AC.

I've always liked reading Wick's articles. He had the combination of sense, experience, and the writing style that could hold even my attention. I recently subscribed to Cooner but I'll probably let it run out, if it doesn't get Wick back, or improve in some way.

I don't mind reading about hunt winners, as long as good questions are asked. Some of those articles tend to be all the same, with the same old questions asked, and the tough, interesting questions NOT asked.

For example, it was mentioned the Burden fellow had some unique ways of training young hounds. One method was described and was something I never heard of before, and sounded like a good idea. WHat about the others?

Another stupid question that gets asked of big PKC hunt winners, is "what registry do you prefer, UKC or PKC?" Duh. The guy just deposited a 5 figure check in his bank account. WTH do you think he's gonna say?

I'd like to see some tougher questions asked. Like:
1. How many times has your dog been scratched for fighting?
2. Was your dog REALLY born on November 1?
3. Do you have a 40+ hour a week job?
4. Have you ever been suspended or barred? If so, why?

The problem is these questions will never get asked, because the coonhound media is in bed with the registries. The only time they get tough is if they are sqabbling with each other. If anybody ever had the guts and the money, there could be a 60 Minutes for coonhounds that I bet would sell like hotcakes.

HMMMMMMM. Well, I vowed to stay out of this post, especially since no one on this thread cares for my writing; perhaps I will resign. Please remember that John was also doing interviews, which I've had to take up the slack during this time he hasn't been writing, making more interviews on my plate, and less time or space to write anything else.

Why don't some of you approach Terry and express an interest in doing some of these interviews?

But as to this quote, above, for your information, I have never asked that question of anyone I've interviewed. With all due respect, Duh, back at you. Ask every one of them and you'll get the same answer every time. But if someone says something on his own regarding his likes or dislikes one way or another and evidently feels strongly about it, I will put it in the article and over the years and number of interviews I've done for both magazines, I think that there is a healthy smattering of preferences out there. To each his own.

Thanks for reading.

I have often thought about writing on article on the advantages of video taping your coondog and how easy it is. I know Terry would publish in one or a couple of his magazines (I would have to reword it for the beaglers) and maybe even Coonhound Bloodlines would be interested. But, I just bought a DVD recorder and a 120 GB external hard drive to store all my video stuff on, so I am too busy formatting all my videos to write. I reckon if I would just quit the message boards, I would have lots of time. LOL I reckon I am too busy depositing the checks my videos bring in.

Vickie, I appreciate your efforts and you do a good job. I look forward to reading what you write. I've also read Wick's interviews and I think he does a good job on them, too. I'm not trying to hurt your feelings or anything but I happen to think Wick is a pretty good writer. Thats my opinion and I'm entitled to it just as you are with yours.

I would like to point out that nowhere did I say that was your question. If anybody assumed that, then they must not read ANY interviews in magazines. So, chill.

John Wick

I always read Wick' article's first thing when getting my Cooner.I thought he had a lot of helpful ideas and info.Sorry to hear he is no longer writing, and I will not renew if they dont bring him back, unless this is his choice.I too think that it gets boring looking at the same stud dogs, the same interviews, and the same ads every month, heck even most of the classifieds are the same, month after month. Most of the time I will pick my cooner up and try find something new,if their is nothing,I put it down.

Thank you for your post, John D. I also think John Wick is a good writer and have no problem with that; as a matter of fact I write for several different magazines that all have many talented writers on board. No one holds the monopoly on that and I certainly don't think that I do...variety is what makes the world go 'round.

But, this thread was talking about Cooner. Your comment, therefore, was taken in context with Cooner. John and I were the only ones doing interviews, he isn't writing right now, so voila -- I came to the conclusion that you had to be referring to me -- and I've not ever asked that question. So I simply set the record straight.

Sincerely,

--Vickie Lamb

Vickie, I enjoy your articles and interviews. Thanks for your efforts to improve our sport.

I also enjoyed Wick's articles and interviews and wish he still wrote for Cooner.

I also look forward to many new writers in the future with their new ideas for improving our sport.
