I have a 15 month old Bluetick that I am trying to get hunting. She will go nuts over a rolling caged coon. When we release one and turn her loose she does not bark on trail but will follow the trail to the tree. She gives up after a while and comes to find us. I know that we made mistakes by showing her to many live coon and that she expecting us to give her the coons. But what to do now? I am as frustrated as a wood pecker locked in a steel mill LOL.

i can see why you might blame yourself for messing her up but don't. she might have been the same reguardess of what you did. as for now, only time will tell. keep taking her to the woods mostly by herself by sometimes with a good dog, if you have access to one. otherwise just keep hunting her but do anymore caged game stuff. some hounds are slow starters and your's might be one of those.

If you still want to trap coons and want to turn one loose for her this is what we do. Have someone else take the coon to turn out spot and take coon into woods ( I turn coon loose in creek) and turn it loose then in a few minutes take your dog and turn her loose in the area and let her find the coon track. It may take a few times but this does work and in my mind is better than letting the dog see the coon when turning it loose. If your in thin coon this way insures a hot track but doesn't mean they will tree it though. JMTCW

the problem i've had with turning coon loose in the woods is the coon frequently climbs the first tree. i like to release them in a big field. that way the dogs finds the track, tracks it to the edge of the woods and usually the coon is in a near by tree. i think it's better.

IF SHE FOLLOWS THE TRACK TO THE TREE, WHY WOULD SHE HAVE TO COME FIND YOU ?
YOU SHOULD ALREADY BE AT THE TREE WITH HER.

when we let a coon out to put a pup behind, from the trap we made a transport box that totally closed up with holes to breathe. when you release the coon its in a box and doesnt see you. turn ur light off, be quiet, and step away when you open the door. our door slides up and down. most coon will walk out and go in the woods and not go up the first tree they come to. wait until you cant hear it walking or see it, and then start walking to get the pup. on the box, the coon will walk right in the box from the trap because its dark inside, that way when you trap a coon, the trap stays to rebait it. and you walk away with a wooden box with coon inside.....

I am green as they come when it comes to working with coon dogs. How do u make a dog really want a coon or develop the desire for one. I think she lacks self confidence. If we have her on a lead she will sometimes bark on trail but turn her loose and she seems to be concentrating on the smells of the ground so much.

I've been in your shoes before or I wouldn't give you advice. Here's what worked for me - no more caged coon, just hunt the dog with a good pup trainer. Once it starts tracking and treeing, hunt the dog alone. You cannot make a dog want a coon, you have to let them want the coon.

my best advice is to read everything you can find on training a coondog. then use your own common sense to decide what is good advice and what is not. if it does not make sense to you on how the dog would make the connection on what your doing - with what the dog is suppose to learn ,then chances are the dog will not make the connection either.
join www.coondawgs.com there are pages of how to's with search options in the training forum to find advice and answers to anything you can think up to ask. then read ,read and read.

What I did and I dont know if it is right or what but it seems to work on the one hound I have trained and the pup I am training now which is 7 months and has started opening on track and tree a little with other dogs. But what I did is when they were pups is I kept a frozen coonskin around and I would just run a track in the back yard, this would be when the pup was 12 weeks or so. I when they found it I would let them chew on it and and even throw it around with them and would praise the whole time they are chewing or tracking, but once they really got into it I would take it away and throw it back in the freezer. I would wait a few days or even a week and pull it out again and do the same thing sometimes I would run a track and some time I would just play tug of war with them. But everytime I would take it away just when they wanted it most. After awhile I would get the skin out with out them Knowing it and let them out of there kennel and as soon as they caught that scent they would run around the yard searching everywhere until tey found it, then I would move to a patch of woods and do short tracks and make them longer as the progress until they went off in the woods by themselves or with older dogs. Like I said that is what has worked for me so far but I am also a new to this. Toe cutter knows his stuff.

All the suggestions on here are good but if she doesnt have it dont waste your time, life is too short to hunt a mediocre dog. She should be running and making her own trees by now, give her a few more months and drop a couple coons on her head. If shes still leaving the tree and doesnt hunt hard start over with a walker.
