A few nights ago me and my buddy were out hunting and both our dogs were treed and when we went in my dog was 300 yards from the tree. We had shot the coon down and were skinning it when my dog came walking in really slow with a huge lump on her chest. I took her to the animal hospital and $600 later they said she got bit by a snake. I was skeptical at first it being february and all but its been a very mild winter and it was almost 55 the night we were hunting and the dog looked like she'd been digging in a hole. When the doc showed me the bite marks on her chest i was shocked. She gave me some antibiotics and i gave her benadryl but i was wondering if there is anything i can give her to speed up the heeling process and when will she be able to hunt again. i had planned on taking her to southern redbone days and was wondering if she'd be healthy enough. She seems fine in the house and around the yard. She runs around and shows no energy lose but she still has a lump the size of a golf ball on her chest.

in 25 years i have only taken one snake bit dog to the vet.... usually hunt them the next night or as soon as the swelling starts down.... is the knot hard or soft.... if soft stick a big gauge needle n it and let drain if hard it probably will be there from now on.... we dont have many rattlers and the one dog i took to the vet was biten by one... mostly cotton mouths here... my wife killed one in the front yard the other day fishing so they are stirring

if the dog has the energy and mobility that it normally has, its fine to hunt them. I had one bitten by a rattlesnake on a saturday night, gave it benedryl, and 3 cc of penicillin on sunday, and monday. We went hunting tuesday night in an AKC hunt and wo the cast. I have no doubts your dog will be fine. The key to a recovery is the first 24 hours. If they make that long, they'll normally be fine. Around here, a large diamondback bite, and you'll be digging a hole inside of 8 hours.

i have never taken one to the vet for a snake bite. the vet told me just to give them milk an gatorade an a night or two latter its back to hunting. an trust me they get bit often around here.. also a old man told me if a dog gets bit to take a rag an but gas on it an then wipe the bite right away. he said if u do the gas trip that u can turn around an hunt a few min latter... he said he never leaves his house with out a little gas in a jug. good luck hope to see u at sothern

i have heard of the gas trick too, but never put it to test. As for it working on a full dosed large diamondback bite? JMO but it seems the shovel is normally needed. I have had two bitten by 6 foot and bigger diamond backs, and both are running coons in the big purina woods in the sky.

What kind of needle would you recommend using I got a few big sewing needles laying around the house could I try using one of those?

I had one bit by a 6ft rattler on the foot and we watched happen. She didnt hunt the rest of the night cause her foot was as big as a softball. She went on the make nt ch and still alive. She does have what appears to be a huge wart where she got bit. She'll be 10 years old in a few days and will still get it done. That was about 7 years ago. Your dog will be fine Im sure.

I keep several shots of Dexamethosone and a couple needles with me when snakes are out. Give a dog 3cc under the skin after a snake bite and they wont even be swelled the next morning. I get he Dex from my vet.

It's an anti inflammatory steroid that keeps the swelling and pain down. The dog will still usually get sick to its stomach the night it is bit but will be fine and eating the next morning.

Snake bites aren't an issue where I hunt really and this was the first time I've ever had to deal with one I'll be alot more prepared for the next one though thanks for all your help guys.

I had an old vet he is dead now, tell me yrs ago if I was hunting in the summer to keep me a cattle prong with me and if I got a dog snake bit get it to the shocker with in 5 min and shock it were it got bit a few times I put it to the test in south Ga last yr and it seem to work the dog lived it did not like the prong but it got bit 2 times by a big rattler. Just something to think about I keep one in my truck now.

i have heard of that too. Even heard they are doing it in Mexico for snake bit humans. I think i could try on a dog, but i don't think i am into trying out that theory on a human.
