I used to coon hunt with my grandpa when I was younger mostly just follow him through the woods, and clean the dogs up when we got home. Well I have recently be blessed enough to get a place with alot of land surrounded by thousands and thousands of acres of state hunting land, and I want to get into coonhunting again. Where do I start I have the kind of hound picked out and where I am going to get him from. I'm just looking for a crash course of coonhunting 101 to refresh my memory. Any and all comments welcome. I'm doing it cause I remember how much fun it was when I was a kid with my grandpa, and I want to get good at it so when my daughter is old enough she has the fond memories that I do.

Get a good light 21 volt is the best all around volt I've seen but doesn't matter what name brand they all use about the same batteries then a good pair of boots and waders then after that I'd worrie about the tracking system to go with all togeather get ready to spend at the minimum 1500 to get started

Which tracking system is the most dummy proof. we never used them when I was a kid.

garmin would be my choice... i have the 320 with dc 40 collars and love it. simple and easy to use

Me eather. Haha if you can find your way back to the truck so can that dog. I'd go with a Garmin since you have a lot of land that you could get turned around on even with a good compass and knowing how to use it the Garmin is simple ones you tinker with it for a few days in the yard but I'd also have a tracker classic or something for backup just incase the Garmin collar goes out

We got the same story, got back into it not that long ago myself. You got some money to spend, everything from the kennel to a coon squall.

A good place to start is to find you a good Coon Club and go to every event they have. Good luck with your new dog.

First buy the very best dog you can afford, the best way to accomplish this is to hunt with as many guys as you can and buy a dog thats not for sale. It will be money well spent.Theres lots of guys driving around with a fancy light and a thousand dollar dog box with a hound inside that isnt forth fifty bucks.
Dont start with a puppy. Puppies need a trainer and your probably not one. Most beginners ignore this advise thinking they will get a good bred pup and learn togeather and it just doesnt work that way. Buy a good solid old dog and that dog will teach you how to be a coonhunter.

Don't let him take you to his personal hunting land when you go to check out the dog go to public land and see what she is really made of if she is four years old
