any advice on curing a dog of getting "car sick"


my dog is 8 months old now and has NEVER been in a truck till now...thought he might fare better up front...well, he did all THREE inside my truck before i made it a mile! lol

now he seems to just be throwing up in the box...HATES getting near a truck because he hates going on the ride...starts drooling as soon as i start the truck...cant make it very far and he throws up...


normally i start taking them everywhere i can when they are real young and never had this problem..


i want him to WANT to get in the box and dont want him getting sick...


i had him at camp last week...2hr ride up there and he was miserable..but i was trapping and thought it'd be a good way to spend time working with him in the woods, on the lead, in the truck, etc..my friend raised him till now for me and didnt mess with him other than took care of him and let him run..didnt expect or want her to train him for me...


only thing i can think of is short trips and lots of them...i was thinking of taking him to run my trap line every morning..it'd only be a mile or 2 tops..could leave him in the box or take him for short walks checking my traps and load him back up...

till i took him to camp, he would readily load in a pickup and didnt fight me to get in the box...now, he fights me if i get near the truck and i gotta force him in the box....

cant have a coondog that wont load or ride in the truck!

let him ride in an open truck a few days outside the box and he will be fine

Load him up every possible time you can and haul him everywhere. Going to the grocery store take him. Need gas take him. Time in the truck will help. Get a big thick rubber truck mat that you can take out and wash when he gets sick also. Sounds like you are by checking your line tho. Good luck. I had a dog who got really sick also and it took almost a year before she stopped throwing up and getting nervous. That is what worked for me anyhow.

Merry Christmas to y'all...and thanks for the replies...sounds like my idea of taking him everywhere i can is right on...



typically i let my dogs ride in the bed..not in a box..when im hunting around the farm..i know its dangerous but we dont go far or fast and they all get educated to stay put and dont run around like a crazy dog or stand on the sides etc...

i let him ride in the open bed a few times and he was better...but, hes starting to hate the truck period and if i dont put him in the box he has been trying to jump out..not sure he would try to jump out if i started moving..but i dont need him to do that!


i'll just keep taking him and trying to work through it with him...i think once i start training him and haul him with another dog or 2 etc he'll get over it quickly..right now a trip in the truck isnt real "fun" for him..we get out, go for a walk, and come back..hunting/training and/or being with another dog will be more fun for him..

Just keep haulin your pup,eventually it will get better.

I had a male once that never totally got over riding, he would drool all over, he made a coondog,but when you got him out of the box, his front legs and feet would be soaked with drool.

once they start hunting and know the ride is going to lead to a fun night of hunting they will get over it.

once they start hunting and know the ride is going to lead to a fun night of hunting they will get over it.

throw him in the box go for long rides 4 or 5 hours its alot easier when they are little pups ive had this problem a few times

Stay away from drugs such as Dramamine, Cerenia, etc unless absolutely necessary.
If I had to give something to a dog for motion sickness, which I have several times. I would use Diphenhydramine. (Children's Liquid Benadryl) You can get it from Kroger's, Wal-Mart, etc.
Give it to them about 30 minutes before traveling and usually works great and you don't get your dog addicted to it.
I personally take them on rides from when they are 12 weeks old on. They get hang of it and never bother's them.
Waiting until they are 8 months old before they are hauled is a big No No.
They get sick, get scared, and not have any fun. They spend all night trying to find grass to eat, etc..
Here is another tip and a Big NO NO. Don't feed them within 1 hour of traveling. It will all come right back up and you'll be wasting feed, and making them sick for no reason.
I personally feed Diamon Naturals. I feed half their portion in the morning and half in the evening about 3 hous before Go Time.

like i said, i typically take em everywhere i go when they are much younger...introduce them to new people, new dogs, new places, new scents etc etc and get them used to being hauled...

i moved out of state for work when my pup was 10 days old..my friend kept him for me till now..i didnt expect her to teach him anything...just keep him safe and healthy..she did that and let him run free and taught him some basic commands and stuff when she could..he sits and shakes and knows his name...i broke him on the lead and house trained him and started letting him run and making him come to me etc...

just gotta get him over the truck...i think he'll be fine in time...


i never even thought of drugs...i will exhaust all other resources before any kind of drug...


smart dog...for being an intact male, he has been pleasant to work with thus far...a couple minutes on the lead in the woods and he knew to walk where i like my dog to walk which is right infront of me or right to my side..that lead goes tight, im not happy..cant stand leading a moron in the dark thick woods! house broke him within 2 days and didnt have to try at all..he peed in the camp 2 different times...i told him no and bad and tapped his nose and took him outside both times...now he goes to the door and whines and paws at it and i caught him trying to open the door with his mouth!!

cant wait to get him started...my buddy started his from the same litter already and his is coming on and doing well...i like to let mine get a little older before i mess with them at all..just my preference..he will be showed a coon real soon...i watched him tree a squirrel by scent the other day and couldnt believe it...naturally he seen the squirrel on the ground but ran that direction with his nose on the ground and started barking..sniffed the tree and came right natural and started blowing the top off...

LOUD dog...heck of a mouth on him...if i cant keep him, he will make someone very happy i think...never know..but he seems to have all the ingredients already...im super excited about him and hope "life" works out and allows me to keep him...if not he will be sold late this spring after hes running and treeing alone..

MY PUP THROUGH UP THE FIRST 2 TIMES HE GOT HAULED IN THE BOX. SO I STARTED FEEDING HIM IN THE MORNINGS INSTEAD EVENINGS SEEMED TO HELP DIDN'T THROUGH UP THE NEXT FEW TIMES.
