First..Start completely over with the dog.
At feed time be a good 100 feet or so away from the dog. When he lowers his head to eat fire one shot from a blank gun. Do not pay any attenton to the dog but notice if he raises his head or shows any sign of fear. You're done this time. Repeat this for several days...one shot when the dog is eating. After 3-4 days if the dog is not showing fear move 25 feet closer. One shot...that's all. Never pay any attention to the dog once you have fired the gun!! The dog will watch you and if you act as if nothing has happened the dog will begin to feel secure. We hope that the dog will go right back to eating. Do not rush this process. It may take a week it may take several weeks. One shot a day and only when the dog is eating. We are hoping the dog will associate the sound of the gun with something positive.
I would not risk shooting anything more than a blank gun until the dog is showing no signs of fear.
Also, anything you do around the dog should be loud!!!!
If you play music, blast it. If the dog is in the house...crank up the TV.
Never never console the dog for showing fear of the gun or noise. This only sends the message to the dog that he was right to be scared.
Trying to turn around a gunshy dog takes an extreme amount of time and patience but in some cases it can be achieved.
I can not stress enough....one shot a day...no more!

That's exactly right. The trick is to pay no attention. A rifle is as natural as passing gas. You could probably make a dog pootshy if if made abig deal out of it. The dog was probably "introduced" to a rifle. Which is stupid. For example, The nurse is going to give you a shot, She tells you she has to go get a big old syringe and it's going to hurt just to get you prepared. She's gone for 5 minutes for me to dread it. Just stick me and be done with it already.
