Had a birddog get a face full years ago no fun. Got a question if a dog comes upon a dead porkie and chews on it will the quills still stick??

Yes, dead ones will still give your dog a mouth full of quills. We have tons of them in southcentral PA. Your dog better be broke off them as you can run into one just about any were you hunt around here!! They just made it legal this year to kill them.

We are polluted with them here in central PA. I'm very thankful to have had to only ever pull quills from Zam and Autumn 2 times, they seemed to learn their lesson well from them. My neighbor had a huge pitbull that got into them almost everyday and I mean 'GOT INTO THEM!' We must of pulled 1000's of them from him. We used Ace horse tranquilizer on him and sit and yanked for hours.

I need to check my photobucket account, I think I may still have a picture of him in there with all his quills sticking out. Even a dead porky can cause trouble, so the old saying doesn't even hold true that the only good one, is a dead one!

Word around here in south west PA is that if you cut them in half ( the quills that is, not your dog) this will let them breath and collapse and you just pull um right out no trouble and no pain..

Now cousin, if you come down here, you won't have to worry about those none. We do have gators, but they're only active 7-8 months out the year...

You got that right Lorie!!! we have to many we are polluted with them around here!! we just treed one last week, but a least it was up the tree, because i'm sure that we would have been pulling quills we pulled quills seven times out of one dog this past year!!!

PLIERS, don't leave home without them.
Most learn in a few sessions but some you just have to quit hunting in porky country. Some that you think have learned just find it hard not to HELP when another starts shaking one.
Like other trash you almost forget their around once your dogs are broke of them.

Had them up north where I grew up at. Don't miss them a bit. Some dogs were easily broke off of them. Others not so much. They'll put a damper on a good hunt in a hurry.

Round here we call them 'prickly squirrels', not sure why. I just hate them, will run over every one I see on the road. So far no flats, but have had quills in my tire already. And if you happen to stab a quill into yourself, they burn like fire and throb, no wonder the dogs go insane with them in their face. I have learned though, if you go to the vet and get the dog put under to remove them, they are far more likely to go back to one again. Make it feel the pain of removing them and as far as I can tell, they think twice before messing with one. Course that doesn't take into account the dogs that just won't let them alone, some dogs never learn!

We all carry a leatherman with us hunting, mostly for this purpose.
