Round here we call them 'prickly squirrels', not sure why. I just hate them, will run over every one I see on the road. So far no flats, but have had quills in my tire already. And if you happen to stab a quill into yourself, they burn like fire and throb, no wonder the dogs go insane with them in their face. I have learned though, if you go to the vet and get the dog put under to remove them, they are far more likely to go back to one again. Make it feel the pain of removing them and as far as I can tell, they think twice before messing with one. Course that doesn't take into account the dogs that just won't let them alone, some dogs never learn!
We all carry a leatherman with us hunting, mostly for this purpose.
