Astro 320 or 220 ????

Is there any difference if you don't care about the birds eye view ? If there is, what is it ?

Had to use one at a hunt the other night to find a mans dog he had the 320 was no better than my 220, they did not have the brids eye veiw on there unit. I have not used one with the brids eye view on it yet.

I used the 2 side by side for six months.

The main advantage is the satellite link up time. By the time the 320 goes through its boot up, it is linked, while the 220 will take another 20-30 seconds. The 320 is more user friendly than the 220 and has more tracking options, but there is only little if any difference in power. The 320 comes with 2 antennas- the regular rubber ducky and an extended range. The extended range antenna can be purchased from any of the vendors on here and give you comparable range. As one of the field testers, until we were given BirdsEye right at the public release time, I could not see why anyone would want to upgrade. Then after Birdseye, I can't even look at a standard screen anymore. Remember the old GPS, before topo? That is what a topo screen seems like now. I don't understand the foot dragging about getting BirdsEye. If you download everything you would more than likely ever want in the first year, you will never have to renew. We are only talking 25-30 bucks. I bet you have spent more than that in the last year dinking around with this wonder antenna or another. lol

The cost of BirdsEye, isn't a problem at all as I see it, the problem is if, for instance, I go to the Grand American, what do download? All of 3 states? Can you do that?

No you can't do that !!

You would have to have a laptop with Internet and Basecamp, Then ask your guide where his hunting areas are..

Good Luck with That !!

But I have seen some Hi-Bred Maps off the Nat.Geo. Site that Combines Topo and Sat images in much Larger Quads then BirdsEye can !!

But I just have'nt figured out how to Convert the Different File Types yet ...

If anyone how how please post !!!!

Photos of the Super Quads from "TopoExplorer" NatGeo Site

The Prob I have is These Topo/Sat Maps come in as .PDF Files and I need to Convert them to .IMG Files then to a Map File that BaseCamp can Read ...

These Super Quads are Huge compaired to how long it would Take to Download areas From BirdsEye !!!

First is a Standard Topo

This is the HiBred Image

And one Zoomed in ..

There are 3 different grades to download, standard, high, and highest. The higher you download the longer and more memory is used. There is not a lot of difference in viewing the high from highest. You could probably download a whole area in a 150 radius in high and still have memory left over. Besides even if your 320 is full, you can still download to your basecamp and then if you were going to another area, delete what you don't need from the 320 and put in the state you are going to and then when you get back home reverse it. If you take your laptop with you, you could add from basecamp to the Astro sitting in the truck, if you already have it saved in basecamp without getting on the internet.

WHAT????????????????
Uhhhh, I'm just a dumb coonhunter, I can get my truck in reverse but I'm not so sure about reversing my Garmin and I really don't want to pack a computer when I go hunt'in.
Seriously, I think understand what you are getting at but there is such a thing in my world as information overload.
I'm fine with my 220 for now but then I can recall saying the same thing bout my 5100 head not so long ago. Now I got 3 different LED heads.

If you don't have Birdseye downloaded for a particular area you are hunting, it will show the topo like you currently are using, so I guess I don't understand why a person would let not having an area downloaded for some area that they would go to maybe once every year or two stop them from enjoying Birdseye for their local area that is used 5 nights a week. I have 2 320s. One is a prototype that was used in the early testing. It doesn't have a serial number, so it will not accept Birdseye. I mainly have it sitting around as a conversation piece, because it is almost worthless to me. Before you get ahead of me, I had to agree that no one else would get their hands on it, as it is a proto type and Garmin doesn't want it 'floating around'. lol

I was just about to get ahead of you till I read that last sentence........................

If I was buying a Garmin right now, getting the 320 would be the obvious choice but I have 2 220's so I doubt I will be upgrading very soon. By the time I'm ready they will prolly have a 420.

Could be, but I wouldn't put much money up that a 420 is in the near future. I would expect a newer generation of collar to be next. I will have to give Garmin credit on the field testing before letting it go public. There were about 3 months of frustration getting the bugs out of it to the point the public got to see it for the first time. One was the original pointer was about 3 times bigger and we had to do a lot whining to get them to downsize it to the size of the 220. The first version: tree switch, lost communication, etc would stay on the screen until you pushed enter button. A glitch would lock it up and you would have to pull the batteries to go again. We would get an email with an attachment to download a newer version to fix that bug and then that one would create another bug, etc. If Garmin would have put forth that effort with the DC40, the public would have got a better product out of the box than the first ones did.

I have a 320 and a 220

The 220 will just be a backup or my brother can use it when he goes to the hunts.. I didn't down load the birdseye but I'm very satisfied with the new unit . Better screen, faster link to the satellites, even when you manually enter a collar, it picks it up all most instantly.
