if shes that old and only been on caged coons i would say you probly wont change her ways shes just running around looking to see which tree the coon is end but she might come around people dont relize that you can mess up a young dog showing it caged coons all the time hope you the best with her jmo

No more drags, no more hung up coon. Hunt at night with a good dog or dogs. Tie back at tree no coon until she shows she is tracking with other dog. If she was mine that's what I would try. Only option you have. JMO. Patience she won't change over night. Good luck.

Google canine 'nose work' or 'tracking games', and try some of those with her around the yard. Nothing to do with coonhunting, but it will get her started using and relying on her nose to find what she wants. It doesn't teach them to track, it just introduces them to what they can do with their innate tracking ability, and builds confidence in their scenting abilities. After a week or two, 'click' - that lightbulb will go off, and she'll be a coonhunting fool...she already wants the coon, you just need to help her figure out that the easiest way to find it by using her nose.....

Yes, I know you have to hunt to make a dog. I don't feed my dogs cage coon after cage coon. I just got her and was wanting some input. Thanks for all the ideas so far.

Like up top said tie her back dont let her have the coon till she starts using her nose! then dump her in a hot spot and see how she does! I had a female that was 2yrs old and had the same problem with her thats what i done sold her when she started treeing and wish i never would have so yes!!!! Be pateint!

Drag her feed through the yard and put it in a different spot every time. Guarantee she starts using her nose or gets real skinny one.

There is nothing wrong with turning loose a coon for a dog to run. The problem is when you continue to show the dog the coon in the cage and/or continue to let them see it run out of the cage. Or, if all that you do is turn loose coons. That have to learn how to find a track and that sometimes there is no track to find.

The dog knows absulutely no difference in a track from a coon that you trapped and turned loose versus a hot track that it finds in the woods. When I turn a coon loose, I don't let the dog see it first off (in the cage or when I cut it out) and I don't dump the dog out on top of the track. I will go up in the woods, cut it out and let it run for awhile, then dump the dog out in the woods 75 yards or so away.

Just like anything else, moderation is best. I will turn loose several coons for puppies, but only turn loose for older dogs to knock the rust off after a long lay-up.
