I would like to hear the opinions on what you guys consider a "close" hunter, a "medium" hunter, and a "Deep" hunter.

I would probably say 200 to 500 is close, 500 to 1000 is medium, and anything over 1000 is deep. Whats your take on it?

IF a dog don't hunt up to or over 1000 yards where i hunt he may never even strike a cold track. I went 1.6 mile last night to two coons with my cousin and they tracked for 45 min.

Ive had them wide hunting dogs. They can be fun to hunt in a hunt because you can count on them being deep and lonely with a coon. But truth is. Half of them dont start hunting until they are 5-600 yards. They just fly in and sandbag hot coons....run past alot.

I want my dog to hunt hard and fast, but want him to hunt out first. ...I guess I want mine to be an anywhere hunting dog that will tree em 100 yrds or a mile in

We got distemper where I hunt and the coon were a little thin this year. Opening night I found my two younger dogs four and a half miles away treed. That's deep enough for me. They will come to the tone button when it's time to go home. I got the best of both worlds. My old dog goes about three or four hundred yards and that's a little close for my tastes, but he's still a heck of a dog.

I live in the hills of Eastern Ky, where coons are medium to thin in population. It's not to rare for a dog to strike and trail a coon and end up a 1/2 mile to a mile. But I'd say my average walks from truck to the tree is 400-600 yds. Deep hunting is a dog that consistently gets out of hearing range, and you often have to drive around to find and get them. I like for a dog to get treed when I turn them loose, but I don't want a straight liner, most of the time if a dog will hunt a hollar out they will hit a track and tree a coon.

i like for a dog to check back in just incase there is nothing moving our dream female just refuses to do that lol when u cut her loose you going to find her either hunting like hell to find one, or under a coon somewhere. she has no reverse to her. lol.

Here in Souther Ohio

200-400 Yards = Close Hunter

400-800 Yards = Medium Hunter

800 Yards - .75 Mile = Wide Hunter

.75 Mile + = Eventually Found Dead on Road

i consider deep 1000 yards or more. i own a hound that its not uncommon for him to walk you to 2 or 3 trees a night averaging .6 of mile or more on the garmin every time.

1000+ or 1/2 mile-ish is deep, but most dogs will go up to that from time to time. I consider a deep hunter one that will go well beyond that (mile or more) if the track takes it, or if needed to find a track.

Some dogs though will get on a track and stay with it even if they cross a hot one. Nothing wrong with that. Some will jump from hottest to hottest which may not be anything bad with that either unless he can't run one to the tree and just track all night.

if my cur trees over 200 im shocked. never treed over 350 and i like it that way. i hunt in thick coon and i turn out right on top of them. if i had to walk 2 miles to a dog id try and turn loose closer to the coon. anything over 3/4-1 mile is rediculous and almost always trash around here.
