I would think that you would have got about 10 different answers. This would all depend on what you personally were looking for. A pup trainer, a competition dog, a female to raise some pups, etc. And I would say that a lot of the answers you would get, had we known what we were looking for would also be different.

If I, personally was looking for a pup trainer, I would not really care about the age unless she had arthritis.

If I was looking for a female to raise pups out of, it would depend on how many litter of pups I wanted. I personally, would not look for one over 6, preferably younger, but this is just my opinion.

If I was looking for a competition dog, I would be looking for one between 18 months and 30 months. Again, this is me, everyone is different.

Try and be a little more percise as to what you are looking for, and you may get more responces and their reasons.

6 years old and I really think about a dog twice.
There is no way to tell how long a dog will live past 7.
I like old dogs, but they have a lot of limitations.
And, they can seem alright one night and then without explanation, get really old on you fast.
Also, I wouldn't sell a dog over 7. If I kept them that long, it's probably cause I like them a lot. I'd hate to see them mistreated in their old age.

If you're looking to buy a dog, the best advice I was ever given by a coonhunter was to buy one that was NOT for sale. Personally, I don't think you have a true "coondog" until that dog is in the neighborhood of 4 years old. By that time they should have enough experience behind them to handle any kind of coon track they run across, and be mature enough to not pull puppy stunts.
