I think born with the "drive"....but they must be given an opportunity to refine the inherent traits. They need to be hunted/worked/rewarded.
How many times, out of a litter, are there great dogs and some not worth two cents?

they are either born with the ability or not. but it takes good training to bring out the dogs natural instinct and ability, BOTH. You can't teach a dog to hunt that does not have the desire and drive to hunt.

I was always told you can always break a dog from doing anything but you CAN NOT make a dog do anything.

either they have it or they dont

They must be born with the ability before you can do anything with them. You can't teach a dog how to track a coon, and you can't make a dog tree a coon. If they are born with it, all they need is a ride and some correcting and fine tuning. It's like the old saying goes "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make em drink!"

Ever notice how many hunters cull the duds and then turn around and pat themselves on the back when they get a good one?
I think you can teach a dog to lead and load, i think we can teach them to come when called and not lift their leg on your huntin buddy (although that is pretty funny) BUT beyond that COONDOGS are born to be COONDOGS and as long as they are taken to the woods and exposed to situations where they can do what they were bred to do the genetics are either there or there not.
So the bttom line is they are BORN.

Born!

I wish someone the best of luck training a poodle to run a coon!

Clearly the training is the factor that determinds if that BORN coondog reaches his/her highest potenial.

they are not born coondogs in my opinion... yes they can make coondogs but if they were born coondogs you would tree coons the first night out or you could cull them then... to have a coondog the dog and the handler both have to do their part and even then its a hit and miss situation.... btw i have seen a poodle tree a coon.... but again if they were born they wouldnt even need taking to the woods

it's both, you can teach anything to tree a coon, but the good ones are naturals, you might need to teach not to do certain things, but they were still naturals.

I think naturals are more fun because you don't get so agrivated with them when they are naturally trying

If dogs can be made, then why the emphasis on breeding? Breed any ole pair and make what you want out of it.

sure you can train anydog

You can train a hamster to row a boat and you can train a worthless dog to tree a coon now and then. Does it make that dog a coon dog? Not one I want to feed. Jmo Rather spend my time training one. To do it best. Not just do it.

Born and made

Yes born and made. It takes both in my opinion. I wonder what number are born and never made. I'm sure it is a lot.
Pups need alot of freedom, handling and fun when they are very young also. I have to take mine to the woods a lot to make them into coondogs.

Born they either have it or they don't. They are made with time, and lots of boot leather. No matter how much drive they have they won't make it in a kennel or on a chain. If they've got it in them you owe it to them to get all you can out of them. The good ones live to hunt. I know a poor soul who is still trying to make a dog out of a four or five year old dog, because he is papered out of this world, it's sad, if he had one that was born with it in him and put the time in it he has with the cull, he's have a real coon dog.

i agree 100% i have a blue female that was the same way... but she was a way better coon dog after a years hunting than she was when she was born... thats why i say they are made.... you still got to have all the right ingredients in the dog but all the ingredients in the world want amount to nothing if nothing is whats done with it
