I turned down the railroad due to the traveling. Had a job on a rail gang. Hard to be a father and never be at home though. Lots think i was crazy but being with my children and within driving distance of my family if needed is worth more than money to me.

Hired with Southern in July 72, merged with Norfolk& Western in 78 or 79 to become N&S. Went from a regular job to 20+ deep on the extra board, working brakeman, flagman, or conductor one day a week or less. Took severance pay in December 86. Loved it while I was regular. Extra board sux. Jack Dobson
